Sarah lived for 127 years. That's how long Sarah's life was. 1Sarah lived 127 years.
She died in Kiriath-arba (that is, in Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. 2Then she died in Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. Abraham went to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.
Then Abraham stood up from beside his dead wife and addressed the Hittites. He said, 3Then Abraham got up from mourning his dead wife and said to the sons of Heth,
"I am an alien and an outsider among you. Give me a cemetery among you where I can bury my dead away from my presence."4"I am a temporary settler among you. Grant me ownership of a burial site among you so that I may bury my dead."
The Hittites responded to Abraham, 5The sons of Heth answered Abraham,
"Listen to us, sir. You are a mighty prince among us. Bury your dead in the choicest of our burial tombs. None of us would refuse you his tomb for burying your dead."6"Listen, sir, you are a mighty prince among us! You may bury your dead in the choicest of our tombs. None of us will refuse you his tomb to prevent you from burying your dead."
Abraham rose and bowed before the Hittites, the people of the land, 7Abraham got up and bowed down to the local people, the sons of Heth.
and addressed them, "If you are willing that I should bury my dead out of my sight, listen to me and make a request of Zohar's son Ephron on my behalf. 8Then he said to them, "If you agree that I may bury my dead, then hear me out. Ask Ephron the son of Zohar
Give me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him, at the end of his field. He should sell it to me in your presence at full price for a burial site."9if he will sell me the cave of Machpelah that belongs to him; it is at the end of his field. Let him sell it to me publicly for the full price, so that I may own it as a burial site."
Now since Ephron the Hittite had taken a seat there among the Hittites, he responded publicly to Abraham where the Hittites and everyone who was entering the gate of his city could hear him: 10(Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth.) Ephron the Hethite replied to Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth--before all who entered the gate of his city--
"No, sir. Listen to me! I'll give you the field, and I'll give you the cave that's in it. I give it to you publicly, in the sight of my people. Bury your dead."11"No, my lord! Hear me out. I sell you both the field and the cave that is in it. In the presence of my people I sell it to you. Bury your dead."
Abraham bowed before the people of the land 12Abraham bowed before the local people
and then addressed Ephron so all the people of the land could hear him: "Please listen to me! I'm willing to pay the price of the field. Accept it from me, so I may bury my dead there."13and said to Ephron in their hearing, "Hear me, if you will. I pay to you the price of the field. Take it from me so that I may bury my dead there."
So Ephron answered Abraham, 14Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
"Sir, listen to me! The land is worth 400 shekels of silver, but what's that between us? You may bury your dead."15"Hear me, my lord. The land is worth 400 pieces of silver, but what is that between me and you? So bury your dead."
Abraham agreed with Ephron, so he weighed out to Ephron the money to which he had agreed publicly while the Hittites were listening: 400 shekels of silver at the current merchant rate.16So Abraham agreed to Ephron's price and weighed out for him the price that Ephron had quoted in the hearing of the sons of Heth--400 pieces of silver, according to the standard measurement at the time.
That's how Ephron's field in Machpelah, east of Mamre—the field, the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were within the boundaries of the field—came to be deeded 17So Abraham secured Ephron's field in Machpelah, next to Mamre, including the field, the cave that was in it, and all the trees that were in the field and all around its border,
to Abraham in the presence of all the Hittites and everyone who was entering the city gate. 18as his property in the presence of the sons of Heth before all who entered the gate of Ephron's city.
After this, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave at the field of Machpelah, east of Mamre (that is, in Hebron) in the land of Canaan. 19After this Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah next to Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.
And so the field with its cave was deeded by the Hittites to Abraham as a burial site.20So Abraham secured the field and the cave that was in it as a burial site from the sons of Heth.
