Now the Spirit says clearly that in the last times some people will abandon the faith by following deceitful spirits, the teachings of demons, 1Now the Spirit explicitly says that in the later times some will desert the faith and occupy themselves with deceiving spirits and demonic teachings,
and the hypocrisy of liars, whose consciences have been burned by a hot iron. 2influenced by the hypocrisy of liars whose consciences are seared.
They will try to stop people from marrying and from eating certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. 3They will prohibit marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.
For everything God created is good, and nothing should be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 4For every creation of God is good and no food is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving.
because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.5For it is sanctified by God's word and by prayer.
If you continue to point these things out to the brothers, you will be a good servant of the Messiah Jesus, nourished by the words of the faith and the healthy teaching that you have followed closely. 6By pointing out such things to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, having nourished yourself on the words of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.
Do not have anything to do with godless myths and fables of old women. Instead, train yourself to be godly. 7But reject those myths fit only for the godless and gullible, and train yourself for godliness.
Physical exercise is of limited value, but Godliness is very dear, a pledge of life, both there and here.8For "physical exercise has some value, but godliness is valuable in every way. It holds promise for the present life and for the life to come."
This is a trustworthy saying that deserves complete acceptance.9This saying is trustworthy and deserves full acceptance.
To this end we work hard and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, that is, of those who believe.10In fact this is why we work hard and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of believers.
These are the things you must insist on and teach. 11Command and teach these things.
Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for other believers in your speech, behavior, love, faithfulness, and purity. 12Let no one look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in your speech, conduct, love, faithfulness, and purity.
Until I arrive, give your full concentration to the public reading of Scripture, to exhorting, and to teaching. 13Until I come, give attention to the public reading of scripture, to exhortation, to teaching.
Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy when the elders laid their hands on you. 14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you have, given to you and confirmed by prophetic words when the elders laid hands on you.
Think on these things. Devote your life to them so that everyone can see your progress. 15Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that everyone will see your progress.
Pay close attention to your life and your teaching. Persevere in these things, because if you do so, you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.16Be conscientious about how you live and what you teach. Persevere in this, because by doing so you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.
