After this, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 1Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he finally became hungry.2And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
Then the tempter came. "Since you are the Son of God," he said, "tell these stones to become loaves of bread."3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
But he answered, "It is written, 'One must not live on bread alone, but on every word coming out of the mouth of God.'" 4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
Then the devil took him to the Holy City and had him stand on the highest point of the Temple. 5Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
He told Jesus, "Since you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, because it is written, 'God will put his angels in charge of you,' and, 'With their hands they will hold you up, so that you will never hit your foot against a rock.'" 6And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Jesus responded to him, "It is also written, 'You must not tempt the Lord your God.'" 7Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
Once more the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, along with their splendor. 8Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
He told Jesus, "I will give you all these things if you will bow down and worship me!"9And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
Then Jesus told him, "Go away, Satan! Because it is written, 'You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.'" 10Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
So the devil left him, and angels came and began ministering to him.11Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he went back to Galilee. 12Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
He left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali, 13And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
in order to fulfill what was declared by the prophet Isaiah when he said,14That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
"O Land of Zebulun and Land of Naphtali, on the road to the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the unbelievers! 15The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
The people living in darkness have seen a great light, and for those living in the land and shadow of death, a light has risen." 16The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
From then on, Jesus began to announce, "Repent, because the kingdom from heaven is near!"17From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
While Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the sea, because they were fishermen. 18And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
"Follow me," he told them, "and I will make you fishers of people!" 19And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
So at once they left their nets and followed him. 20And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
Going on from there he saw two other brothers—James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee repairing their nets. When he called them, 21And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
they immediately left the boat and their father and followed him.22And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
Then he went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every illness among the people. 23And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
His fame spread throughout Syria, and people brought to him everyone who was sick—those afflicted with various diseases and pains, the demon-possessed, the epileptics, and the paralyzed—and he healed them. 24And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and from across the Jordan followed him.25And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
