One who becomes stiff-necked, after many reprimands will be shattered instantly-- beyond recovery. 1A man who hardens his neck after much reproof Will suddenly be broken beyond remedy.
When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, people groan. 2When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, But when a wicked man rules, people groan.
A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but one who consorts with prostitutes destroys his wealth. 3A man who loves wisdom makes his father glad, But he who keeps company with harlots wastes his wealth.
By justice a king brings stability to a land, but a man who demands "contributions" demolishes it. 4The king gives stability to the land by justice, But a man who takes bribes overthrows it.
A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. 5A man who flatters his neighbor Is spreading a net for his steps.
An evil man is caught by sin, but the righteous one sings and rejoices. 6By transgression an evil man is ensnared, But the righteous sings and rejoices.
The righteous person knows the rights of the poor, but the wicked one does not understand these concerns. 7The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor, The wicked does not understand such concern.
Mockers inflame a city, but the wise turn away anger. 8Scorners set a city aflame, But wise men turn away anger.
If a wise man goes to court with a fool, there will be ranting and raving but no resolution. 9When a wise man has a controversy with a foolish man, The foolish man either rages or laughs, and there is no rest.
Bloodthirsty men hate an honest person, but the upright care about him. 10Men of bloodshed hate the blameless, But the upright are concerned for his life.
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man holds it in check. 11A fool always loses his temper, But a wise man holds it back.
If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials will be wicked. 12If a ruler pays attention to falsehood, All his ministers become wicked.
The poor and the oppressor have this in common: the LORD gives light to the eyes of both. 13The poor man and the oppressor have this in common: The LORD gives light to the eyes of both.
A king who judges the poor with fairness-- his throne will be established forever. 14If a king judges the poor with truth, His throne will be established forever.
A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a youth left to himself is a disgrace to his mother. 15The rod and reproof give wisdom, But a child who gets his own way brings shame to his mother.
When the wicked increase, rebellion increases, but the righteous will see their downfall. 16When the wicked increase, transgression increases; But the righteous will see their fall.
Discipline your son, and it will bring you peace of mind and give you delight. 17Correct your son, and he will give you comfort; He will also delight your soul.
Without revelation people run wild, but one who listens to instruction will be happy. 18Where there is no vision, the people are unrestrained, But happy is he who keeps the law.
A slave cannot be disciplined by words; though he understands, he doesn't respond. 19A slave will not be instructed by words alone; For though he understands, there will be no response.
Do you see a man who speaks too soon? There is more hope for a fool than for him. 20Do you see a man who is hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
A slave pampered from his youth will become arrogant later on. 21He who pampers his slave from childhood Will in the end find him to be a son.
An angry man stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered man increases rebellion. 22An angry man stirs up strife, And a hot-tempered man abounds in transgression.
A person's pride will humble him, but a humble spirit will gain honor. 23A man's pride will bring him low, But a humble spirit will obtain honor.
To be a thief's partner is to hate oneself; he hears the curse but will not testify. 24He who is a partner with a thief hates his own life; He hears the oath but tells nothing.
The fear of man is a snare, but the one who trusts in the LORD is protected. 25The fear of man brings a snare, But he who trusts in the LORD will be exalted.
Many seek a ruler's favor, but a man receives justice from the LORD. 26Many seek the ruler's favor, But justice for man comes from the LORD.
An unjust man is detestable to the righteous, and one whose way is upright is detestable to the wicked. 27An unjust man is abominable to the righteous, And he who is upright in the way is abominable to the wicked.
