English Standard Version | New Living Translation |
O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins. | 1O God, pagan nations have conquered your land, your special possession. They have defiled your holy Temple and made Jerusalem a heap of ruins. |
They have given the bodies of your servants to the birds of the heavens for food, the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth. | 2They have left the bodies of your servants as food for the birds of heaven. The flesh of your godly ones has become food for the wild animals. |
They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them. | 3Blood has flowed like water all around Jerusalem; no one is left to bury the dead. |
We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those around us. | 4We are mocked by our neighbors, an object of scorn and derision to those around us. |
How long, O LORD? Will you be angry forever? Will your jealousy burn like fire? | 5O LORD, how long will you be angry with us? Forever? How long will your jealousy burn like fire? |
Pour out your anger on the nations that do not know you, and on the kingdoms that do not call upon your name! | 6Pour out your wrath on the nations that refuse to acknowledge you— on kingdoms that do not call upon your name. |
For they have devoured Jacob and laid waste his habitation. | 7For they have devoured your people Israel, making the land a desolate wilderness. |
Do not remember against us our former iniquities; let your compassion come speedily to meet us, for we are brought very low. | 8Do not hold us guilty for the sins of our ancestors! Let your compassion quickly meet our needs, for we are on the brink of despair. |
Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of your name; deliver us, and atone for our sins, for your name’s sake! | 9Help us, O God of our salvation! Help us for the glory of your name. Save us and forgive our sins for the honor of your name. |
Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?” Let the avenging of the outpoured blood of your servants be known among the nations before our eyes! | 10Why should pagan nations be allowed to scoff, asking, “Where is their God?” Show us your vengeance against the nations, for they have spilled the blood of your servants. |
Let the groans of the prisoners come before you; according to your great power, preserve those doomed to die! | 11Listen to the moaning of the prisoners. Demonstrate your great power by saving those condemned to die. |
Return sevenfold into the lap of our neighbors the taunts with which they have taunted you, O Lord! | 12O Lord, pay back our neighbors seven times for the scorn they have hurled at you. |
But we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will give thanks to you forever; from generation to generation we will recount your praise. | 13Then we your people, the sheep of your pasture, will thank you forever and ever, praising your greatness from generation to generation. |
