English Standard Version | New Living Translation |
Give ear to my prayer, O God, and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy! | 1Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my cry for help! |
Attend to me, and answer me; I am restless in my complaint and I moan, | 2Please listen and answer me, for I am overwhelmed by my troubles. |
because of the noise of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked. For they drop trouble upon me, and in anger they bear a grudge against me. | 3My enemies shout at me, making loud and wicked threats. They bring trouble on me and angrily hunt me down. |
My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen upon me. | 4My heart pounds in my chest. The terror of death assaults me. |
Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me. | 5Fear and trembling overwhelm me, and I can’t stop shaking. |
And I say, “Oh, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest; | 6Oh, that I had wings like a dove; then I would fly away and rest! |
yes, I would wander far away; I would lodge in the wilderness; Selah | 7I would fly far away to the quiet of the wilderness. Interlude |
I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and tempest.” | 8How quickly I would escape— far from this wild storm of hatred. |
Destroy, O Lord, divide their tongues; for I see violence and strife in the city. | 9Confuse them, Lord, and frustrate their plans, for I see violence and conflict in the city. |
Day and night they go around it on its walls, and iniquity and trouble are within it; | 10Its walls are patrolled day and night against invaders, but the real danger is wickedness within the city. |
ruin is in its midst; oppression and fraud do not depart from its marketplace. | 11Everything is falling apart; threats and cheating are rampant in the streets. |
For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him. | 12It is not an enemy who taunts me— I could bear that. It is not my foes who so arrogantly insult me— I could have hidden from them. |
But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend. | 13Instead, it is you—my equal, my companion and close friend. |
We used to take sweet counsel together; within God’s house we walked in the throng. | 14What good fellowship we once enjoyed as we walked together to the house of God. |
Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart. | 15Let death stalk my enemies; let the grave swallow them alive, for evil makes its home within them. |
But I call to God, and the LORD will save me. | 16But I will call on God, and the LORD will rescue me. |
Evening and morning and at noon I utter my complaint and moan, and he hears my voice. | 17Morning, noon, and night I cry out in my distress, and the LORD hears my voice. |
He redeems my soul in safety from the battle that I wage, for many are arrayed against me. | 18He ransoms me and keeps me safe from the battle waged against me, though many still oppose me. |
God will give ear and humble them, he who is enthroned from of old, Selah because they do not change and do not fear God. | 19God, who has ruled forever, will hear me and humble them. Interlude For my enemies refuse to change their ways; they do not fear God. |
My companion stretched out his hand against his friends; he violated his covenant. | 20As for my companion, he betrayed his friends; he broke his promises. |
His speech was smooth as butter, yet war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. | 21His words are as smooth as butter, but in his heart is war. His words are as soothing as lotion, but underneath are daggers! |
Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved. | 22Give your burdens to the LORD, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. |
But you, O God, will cast them down into the pit of destruction; men of blood and treachery shall not live out half their days. But I will trust in you. | 23But you, O God, will send the wicked down to the pit of destruction. Murderers and liars will die young, but I am trusting you to save me. |
