O LORD, rebuke me not in your anger, nor discipline me in your wrath! | 1A psalm of David, written to get God's attention. O LORD, do not continue to rebuke me in your anger! Do not continue to punish me in your raging fury! |
For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has come down on me. | 2For your arrows pierce me, and your hand presses me down. |
There is no soundness in my flesh because of your indignation; there is no health in my bones because of my sin. | 3My whole body is sick because of your judgment; I am deprived of health because of my sin. |
For my iniquities have gone over my head; like a heavy burden, they are too heavy for me. | 4For my sins overwhelm me; like a heavy load, they are too much for me to bear. |
My wounds stink and fester because of my foolishness, | 5My wounds are infected and starting to smell, because of my foolish sins. |
I am utterly bowed down and prostrate; all the day I go about mourning. | 6I am dazed and completely humiliated; all day long I walk around mourning. |
For my sides are filled with burning, and there is no soundness in my flesh. | 7For I am overcome with shame and my whole body is sick. |
I am feeble and crushed; I groan because of the tumult of my heart. | 8I am numb with pain and severely battered; I groan loudly because of the anxiety I feel. |
O Lord, all my longing is before you; my sighing is not hidden from you. | 9O Lord, you understand my heart's desire; my groaning is not hidden from you. |
My heart throbs; my strength fails me, and the light of my eyes—it also has gone from me. | 10My heart beats quickly; my strength leaves me; I can hardly see. |
My friends and companions stand aloof from my plague, and my nearest kin stand far off. | 11Because of my condition, even my friends and acquaintances keep their distance; my neighbors stand far away. |
Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long. | 12Those who seek my life try to entrap me; those who want to harm me speak destructive words; all day long they say deceitful things. |
But I am like a deaf man; I do not hear, like a mute man who does not open his mouth. | 13But I am like a deaf man--I hear nothing; I am like a mute who cannot speak. |
I have become like a man who does not hear, and in whose mouth are no rebukes. | 14I am like a man who cannot hear and is incapable of arguing his defense. |
But for you, O LORD, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer. | 15Yet I wait for you, O LORD! You will respond, O Lord, my God! |
For I said, “Only let them not rejoice over me, who boast against me when my foot slips!” | 16I have prayed for deliverance, because otherwise they will gloat over me; when my foot slips they will arrogantly taunt me. |
For I am ready to fall, and my pain is ever before me. | 17For I am about to stumble, and I am in constant pain. |
I confess my iniquity; I am sorry for my sin. | 18Yes, I confess my wrongdoing, and I am concerned about my sins. |
But my foes are vigorous, they are mighty, and many are those who hate me wrongfully. | 19But those who are my enemies for no reason are numerous; those who hate me without cause outnumber me. |
Those who render me evil for good accuse me because I follow after good. | 20They repay me evil for the good I have done; though I have tried to do good to them, they hurl accusations at me. |
Do not forsake me, O LORD! O my God, be not far from me! | 21Do not abandon me, O LORD! My God, do not remain far away from me! |
Make haste to help me, O Lord, my salvation! | 22Hurry and help me, O Lord, my deliverer! |
