So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. | 1Then these three men ceased answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. |
Then Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, burned with anger. He burned with anger at Job because he justified himself rather than God. | 2But the anger of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram burned; against Job his anger burned because he justified himself before God. |
He burned with anger also at Job’s three friends because they had found no answer, although they had declared Job to be in the wrong. | 3And his anger burned against his three friends because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job. |
Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were older than he. | 4Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because they were years older than he. |
And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, he burned with anger. | 5And when Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of the three men his anger burned. |
And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said: “I am young in years, and you are aged; therefore I was timid and afraid to declare my opinion to you. | 6So Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite spoke out and said, "I am young in years and you are old; Therefore I was shy and afraid to tell you what I think. |
I said, ‘Let days speak, and many years teach wisdom.’ | 7"I thought age should speak, And increased years should teach wisdom. |
But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand. | 8"But it is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding. |
It is not the old who are wise, nor the aged who understand what is right. | 9"The abundant in years may not be wise, Nor may elders understand justice. |
Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me; let me also declare my opinion.’ | 10"So I say, 'Listen to me, I too will tell what I think.' |
“Behold, I waited for your words, I listened for your wise sayings, while you searched out what to say. | 11"Behold, I waited for your words, I listened to your reasonings, While you pondered what to say. |
I gave you my attention, and, behold, there was none among you who refuted Job or who answered his words. | 12"I even paid close attention to you; Indeed, there was no one who refuted Job, Not one of you who answered his words. |
Beware lest you say, ‘We have found wisdom; God may vanquish him, not a man.’ | 13"Do not say, 'We have found wisdom; God will rout him, not man.' |
He has not directed his words against me, and I will not answer him with your speeches. | 14"For he has not arranged his words against me, Nor will I reply to him with your arguments. |
“They are dismayed; they answer no more; they have not a word to say. | 15"They are dismayed, they no longer answer; Words have failed them. |
And shall I wait, because they do not speak, because they stand there, and answer no more? | 16"Shall I wait, because they do not speak, Because they stop and no longer answer? |
I also will answer with my share; I also will declare my opinion. | 17"I too will answer my share, I also will tell my opinion. |
For I am full of words; the spirit within me constrains me. | 18"For I am full of words; The spirit within me constrains me. |
Behold, my belly is like wine that has no vent; like new wineskins ready to burst. | 19"Behold, my belly is like unvented wine, Like new wineskins it is about to burst. |
I must speak, that I may find relief; I must open my lips and answer. | 20"Let me speak that I may get relief; Let me open my lips and answer. |
I will not show partiality to any man or use flattery toward any person. | 21"Let me now be partial to no one, Nor flatter any man. |
For I do not know how to flatter, else my Maker would soon take me away. | 22"For I do not know how to flatter, Else my Maker would soon take me away. |
