The LORD spoke to Moses: | 1The LORD said to Moses, |
"Command the Israelites to bring you pure oil from crushed olives for the light, in order to keep the lamp burning regularly. | 2“Command the people of Israel to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually. |
Aaron is to tend it continually from evening until morning before the LORD outside the curtain of the testimony in the tent of meeting. This is a permanent statute throughout your generations. | 3This is the lampstand that stands in the Tabernacle, in front of the inner curtain that shields the Ark of the Covenant. Aaron must keep the lamps burning in the LORD’s presence all night. This is a permanent law for you, and it must be observed from generation to generation. |
He must continually tend the lamps on the pure gold lampstand in the LORD's presence. | 4Aaron and the priests must tend the lamps on the pure gold lampstand continually in the LORD’s presence. |
"Take fine flour and bake it into twelve loaves; each loaf is to be made with four quarts. | 5“You must bake twelve flat loaves of bread from choice flour, using four quarts of flour for each loaf. |
Arrange them in two rows, six to a row, on the pure gold table before the LORD. | 6Place the bread before the LORD on the pure gold table, and arrange the loaves in two stacks, with six loaves in each stack. |
Place pure frankincense near each row, so that it may serve as a memorial portion for the bread and a fire offering to the LORD. | 7Put some pure frankincense near each stack to serve as a representative offering, a special gift presented to the LORD. |
The bread is to be set out before the LORD every Sabbath day as a permanent covenant obligation on the part of the Israelites. | 8Every Sabbath day this bread must be laid out before the LORD as a gift from the Israelites; it is an ongoing expression of the eternal covenant. |
It belongs to Aaron and his sons, who are to eat it in a holy place, for it is the holiest portion for him from the fire offerings to the LORD; this is a permanent rule." | 9The loaves of bread will belong to Aaron and his descendants, who must eat them in a sacred place, for they are most holy. It is the permanent right of the priests to claim this portion of the special gifts presented to the LORD.” An Example of Just Punishment |
Now the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father was among the Israelites. A fight broke out in the camp between the Israelite woman's son and an Israelite man. | 10One day a man who had an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father came out of his tent and got into a fight with one of the Israelite men. |
Her son cursed and blasphemed the Name, and they brought him to Moses. (His mother's name was Shelomith, a daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan.) | 11During the fight, this son of an Israelite woman blasphemed the Name of the LORD with a curse. So the man was brought to Moses for judgment. His mother was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri of the tribe of Dan. |
They put him in custody until the LORD's decision could be made clear to them. | 12They kept the man in custody until the LORD’s will in the matter should become clear to them. |
Then the LORD spoke to Moses: | 13Then the LORD said to Moses, |
"Bring the one who has cursed to the outside of the camp and have all who heard him lay their hands on his head; then have the whole community stone him. | 14“Take the blasphemer outside the camp, and tell all those who heard the curse to lay their hands on his head. Then let the entire community stone him to death. |
And tell the Israelites: If anyone curses his God, he will bear the consequences of his sin. | 15Say to the people of Israel: Those who curse their God will be punished for their sin. |
Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death; the whole community is to stone him. If he blasphemes the Name, he is to be put to death, whether the resident alien or the native. | 16Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the LORD must be stoned to death by the whole community of Israel. Any native-born Israelite or foreigner among you who blasphemes the Name of the LORD must be put to death. |
"If a man kills anyone, he must be put to death. | 17“Anyone who takes another person’s life must be put to death. |
Whoever kills an animal is to make restitution for it, life for life. | 18“Anyone who kills another person’s animal must pay for it in full—a live animal for the animal that was killed. |
If any man inflicts a permanent injury on his neighbor, whatever he has done is to be done to him: | 19“Anyone who injures another person must be dealt with according to the injury inflicted— |
fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Whatever injury he inflicted on the person, the same is to be inflicted on him. | 20a fracture for a fracture, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Whatever anyone does to injure another person must be paid back in kind. |
Whoever kills an animal is to make restitution for it, but whoever kills a person is to be put to death. | 21“Whoever kills an animal must pay for it in full, but whoever kills another person must be put to death. |
You are to have the same law for the resident alien and the native, because I am the LORD your God." | 22“This same standard applies both to native-born Israelites and to the foreigners living among you. I am the LORD your God.” |
After Moses spoke to the Israelites, they brought the one who had cursed to the outside of the camp and stoned him. So the Israelites did as the LORD had commanded Moses. | 23After Moses gave all these instructions to the Israelites, they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned him to death. The Israelites did just as the LORD had commanded Moses. |
