The heavens declare the glory of God, and the expanse proclaims the work of his hands. | 1For the music director; a psalm of David. The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky displays his handiwork. |
Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge. | 2Day after day it speaks out; night after night it reveals his greatness. |
There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard. | 3There is no actual speech or word, nor is its voice literally heard. |
Their message has gone out to the whole earth, and their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun. | 4Yet its voice echoes throughout the earth; its words carry to the distant horizon. In the sky he has pitched a tent for the sun. |
It is like a bridegroom coming from his home; it rejoices like an athlete running a course. | 5Like a bridegroom it emerges from its chamber; like a strong man it enjoys running its course. |
It rises from one end of the heavens and circles to their other end; nothing is hidden from its heat. | 6It emerges from the distant horizon, and goes from one end of the sky to the other; nothing can escape its heat. |
The instruction of the LORD is perfect, renewing one's life; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise. | 7The law of the LORD is perfect and preserves one's life. The rules set down by the LORD are reliable and impart wisdom to the inexperienced. |
The precepts of the LORD are right, making the heart glad; the command of the LORD is radiant, making the eyes light up. | 8The LORD's precepts are fair and make one joyful. The LORD's commands are pure and give insight for life. |
The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are reliable and altogether righteous. | 9The commands to fear the LORD are right and endure forever. The judgments given by the LORD are trustworthy and absolutely just. |
They are more desirable than gold--than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb. | 10They are of greater value than gold, than even a great amount of pure gold; they bring greater delight than honey, than even the sweetest honey from a honeycomb. |
In addition, your servant is warned by them, and in keeping them there is an abundant reward. | 11Yes, your servant finds moral guidance there; those who obey them receive a rich reward. |
Who perceives his unintentional sins? Cleanse me from my hidden faults. | 12Who can know all his errors? Please do not punish me for sins I am unaware of. |
Moreover, keep your servant from willful sins; do not let them rule me. Then I will be blameless and cleansed from blatant rebellion. | 13Moreover, keep me from committing flagrant sins; do not allow such sins to control me. Then I will be blameless, and innocent of blatant rebellion. |
May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, LORD, my rock and my Redeemer. | 14May my words and my thoughts be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my sheltering rock and my redeemer. |
