Look, my eyes have seen all this; my ears have heard and understood it.1"Behold, my eye has seen all this, My ear has heard and understood it.
Everything you know, I also know; I am not inferior to you.2"What you know I also know; I am not inferior to you.
Yet I prefer to speak to the Almighty and argue my case before God.3"But I would speak to the Almighty, And I desire to argue with God.
You use lies like plaster; you are all worthless healers.4"But you smear with lies; You are all worthless physicians.
If only you would shut up and let that be your wisdom!5"O that you would be completely silent, And that it would become your wisdom!
Hear now my argument, and listen to my defense.6"Please hear my argument And listen to the contentions of my lips.
Would you testify unjustly on God's behalf or speak deceitfully for him?7"Will you speak what is unjust for God, And speak what is deceitful for Him?
Would you show partiality to him or argue the case in his defense?8"Will you show partiality for Him? Will you contend for God?
Would it go well if he examined you? Could you deceive him as you would deceive a man?9"Will it be well when He examines you? Or will you deceive Him as one deceives a man?
Surely he would rebuke you if you secretly showed partiality.10"He will surely reprove you If you secretly show partiality.
Would God's majesty not terrify you? Would his dread not fall on you?11"Will not His majesty terrify you, And the dread of Him fall on you?
Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ash; your defenses are made of clay.12"Your memorable sayings are proverbs of ashes, Your defenses are defenses of clay.
Be quiet, and I will speak. Let whatever comes happen to me.13"Be silent before me so that I may speak; Then let come on me what may.
I will put myself at risk and take my life in my own hands.14"Why should I take my flesh in my teeth And put my life in my hands?
Even if he kills me, I will hope in him. I will still defend my ways before him.15"Though He slay me, I will hope in Him. Nevertheless I will argue my ways before Him.
Yes, this will result in my deliverance, for no godless person can appear before him.16"This also will be my salvation, For a godless man may not come before His presence.
Pay close attention to my words; let my declaration ring in your ears.17"Listen carefully to my speech, And let my declaration fill your ears.
Now then, I have prepared my case; I know that I am right.18"Behold now, I have prepared my case; I know that I will be vindicated.
Can anyone indict me? If so, I will be silent and die.19"Who will contend with me? For then I would be silent and die.
Only grant these two things to me, God, so that I will not have to hide from your presence:20"Only two things do not do to me, Then I will not hide from Your face:
remove your hand from me, and do not let your terror frighten me.21Remove Your hand from me, And let not the dread of You terrify me.
Then call, and I will answer, or I will speak, and you can respond to me.22"Then call, and I will answer; Or let me speak, then reply to me.
How many iniquities and sins have I committed? Reveal to me my transgression and sin.23"How many are my iniquities and sins? Make known to me my rebellion and my sin.
Why do you hide your face and consider me your enemy?24"Why do You hide Your face And consider me Your enemy?
Will you frighten a wind-driven leaf? Will you chase after dry straw?25"Will You cause a driven leaf to tremble? Or will You pursue the dry chaff?
For you record bitter accusations against me and make me inherit the iniquities of my youth.26"For You write bitter things against me And make me to inherit the iniquities of my youth.
You put my feet in the stocks and stand watch over all my paths, setting a limit for the soles of my feet.27"You put my feet in the stocks And watch all my paths; You set a limit for the soles of my feet,
A person wears out like something rotten, like a moth-eaten garment.28While I am decaying like a rotten thing, Like a garment that is moth-eaten.
