Parallel Chapters Melchizedek and Abraham
(Genesis 14:17-24) 1This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. First, the name Melchizedek means "king of righteousness"; then also, "king of Salem" means "king of peace." | 2and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. 5Now the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the people--that is, from their fellow Israelites--even though they also are descended from Abraham. | 5And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham. | 5And those indeed of the sons of Levi who receive the priest's office have commandment in the Law to collect a tenth from the people, that is, from their brethren, although these are descended from Abraham. | 5And verily they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham: | 5The sons of Levi who receive the priestly office have a command according to the law to collect a tenth from the people--that is, from their brothers--though they have also descended from Abraham. |
6This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. | 6But this man who does not have his descent from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. | 6But the one whose genealogy is not traced from them collected a tenth from Abraham and blessed the one who had the promises. | 6But he whose descent is not counted from them received tithes of Abraham, and blessed him that had the promises. | 6But one without this lineage collected tenths from Abraham and blessed the one who had the promises. |

9One might even say that Levi, who collects the tenth, paid the tenth through Abraham, | 9One might even say that Levi himself, who receives tithes, paid tithes through Abraham, | 9And, so to speak, through Abraham even Levi, who received tithes, paid tithes, | 9And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. | 9And in a sense Levi himself, who receives tenths, has paid tenths through Abraham, |
10because when Melchizedek met Abraham, Levi was still in the body of his ancestor. | 10for he was still in the loins of his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. | 10for he was still in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him. | 10For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him. | 10for he was still within his ancestor when Melchizedek met him. |
Jesus a Priest Like Melchizedek 11If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood--and indeed the law given to the people established that priesthood--why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? | 11Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? | 11Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron? | 11If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? | 11If then, perfection came through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need was there for another priest to appear, said to be in the order of Melchizedek and not in the order of Aaron? |
12For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also. | 12For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. | 12For when the priesthood is changed, of necessity there takes place a change of law also. | 12For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. | 12For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must be a change of law as well. |

16one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. | 16who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. | 16who has become such not on the basis of a law of physical requirement, but according to the power of an indestructible life. | 16Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. | 16who did not become a priest based on a legal command concerning physical descent but based on the power of an indestructible life. |

21but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him: "The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: 'You are a priest forever.'" | 21but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’” | 21(for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him, "THE LORD HAS SWORN AND WILL NOT CHANGE HIS MIND, 'YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER '"); | 21(For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that said unto him, The Lord sware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:) | 21but He became a priest with an oath made by the One who said to Him: The Lord has sworn, and He will not change His mind, You are a priest forever. |
22Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant. | 22This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. | 22so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant. | 22By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. | 22So Jesus has also become the guarantee of a better covenant. |
23Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; | 23The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, | 23The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, | 23And they truly were many priests, because they were not suffered to continue by reason of death: | 23Now many have become Levitical priests, since they are prevented by death from remaining in office. |
24but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. | 24but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. | 24but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. | 24But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. | 24But because He remains forever, He holds His priesthood permanently. |
25Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. | 25Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. | 25Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them. | 25Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. | 25Therefore, He is always able to save those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede for them. |
26Such a high priest truly meets our need--one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. | 26For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. | 26For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; | 26For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; | 26For this is the kind of high priest we need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. |
27Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. | 27He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. | 27who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself. | 27Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself. | 27He doesn't need to offer sacrifices every day, as high priests do--first for their own sins, then for those of the people.
