The Trumpet Will Sound: Are We Ready?

Talk of Christ’s return can stir both hope and uneasiness. Some treat it as a puzzle to solve; others push it aside. Scripture points us in a better direction. The trumpet will sound, the Lord will come, and the question before each of us is not whether that day will arrive, but whether we are ready to meet Him.

The Promise Is Certain, Even If the Timing Is Not

The Bible speaks plainly about the return of Christ. “For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed” (1 Corinthians 15:52). Paul also writes, “For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God” (1 Thessalonians 4:16). This is not meant to feed endless speculation. Jesus said, “No one knows about that day or hour... but only the Father” (Matthew 24:36). Since the timing is hidden, watchfulness matters more than prediction.

Readiness Begins With Christ, Not Religious Activity

It is possible to be busy with church things and still remain unprepared. The first question is personal: have we truly turned to the Lord? Scripture says, “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves” (2 Corinthians 13:5). Readiness begins with repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. “Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away” (Acts 3:19). And, “if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). A ready heart is not a perfect heart, but a forgiven one.

A Ready Life Shows Itself in Daily Obedience

Waiting for the Lord is not passive. It shapes the way we live today. Jesus warned, “You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44). That kind of readiness grows through ordinary faithfulness:

  • Stay in the Word so your mind is governed by truth rather than fear.
  • Pray honestly and regularly, bringing sin into the light quickly.
  • Turn away from habits that harden the conscience.
  • Practice integrity at home, at work, and in private.
  • Keep short accounts with God and with people.

Scripture connects hope with holiness: “And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as Christ is pure” (1 John 3:3). The expectation of His coming should not make us careless or anxious, but clean-handed and steady.

We Prepare Best When We Walk Faithfully With the Church

No one is meant to get ready alone. God has given His people the fellowship, correction, encouragement, and teaching of the church. “Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching” (Hebrews 10:25). In a confused age, believers need faithful preaching, earnest prayer, and a church life centered on worship, Scripture, and service. Readiness grows in a community where Christ is honored and His Word is obeyed.

The Trumpet Is a Warning to the Unprepared and a Comfort to the Faithful

For those resisting Christ, the thought of His return should be a serious wake-up call. Today is the day to seek mercy. For those who belong to Him, the trumpet is not a threat but a promise. “After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord” (1 Thessalonians 4:17). That is why Paul concludes, “Therefore encourage one another with these words” (1 Thessalonians 4:18).

The question is simple and searching: if the trumpet sounded today, would you be ashamed, distracted, or ready? Come to Christ, walk with Him, stay close to His people, and live in the light of His return. The day is coming. Let us be found faithful.
