Violent and Deceptive

The terms "violent" and "deceptive" are often used in the Bible to describe behaviors and characteristics that are contrary to the nature and will of God. These terms are frequently associated with sin and are condemned throughout Scripture.

Violent

Violence is depicted in the Bible as a manifestation of human sinfulness and rebellion against God. From the earliest chapters of Genesis, violence is shown to be a consequence of the fall. In Genesis 6:11, the earth is described as being "corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence." This pervasive violence was one of the reasons for the judgment of the flood.

The Psalms and Proverbs frequently speak against violence, associating it with wickedness and folly. Psalm 11:5 states, "The LORD tests the righteous and the wicked; His soul hates the lover of violence." Proverbs 3:31 advises, "Do not envy a violent man or choose any of his ways," highlighting the destructive nature of violence and its opposition to the wisdom and peace that come from God.

In the prophetic books, violence is often linked with injustice and oppression. The prophets denounce the violent actions of nations and individuals, calling for repentance and a return to righteousness. For example, in Isaiah 59:6, the prophet laments, "Their cobwebs cannot be made into clothing, and they cannot cover themselves with their works. Their deeds are sinful deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands."

The New Testament continues this theme, with Jesus teaching against violence and promoting peace. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus instructs His followers to turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39) and to love their enemies (Matthew 5:44). The apostle Paul echoes this teaching in Romans 12:17-19, urging believers not to repay evil for evil and to live at peace with everyone.

Deceptive

Deception is another behavior condemned in Scripture, often associated with lying, falsehood, and hypocrisy. The Bible presents God as a God of truth, and deception is seen as antithetical to His character. In Proverbs 12:22, it is written, "Lying lips are detestable to the LORD, but those who deal faithfully are His delight."

The account of Jacob and Esau in Genesis 27 illustrates the destructive consequences of deception. Jacob's deceit in obtaining his father's blessing leads to family strife and separation. Similarly, in the New Testament, the account of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5 serves as a stark warning against deceit within the community of believers.

The Psalms frequently contrast the righteous, who speak truth, with the wicked, who are deceitful. Psalm 5:6 declares, "You destroy those who tell lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man." This association of deceit with wickedness underscores the moral and spiritual danger of deceptive behavior.

Jesus Himself warns against deception, particularly in the context of false teachings and hypocrisy. In Matthew 24:4-5, He cautions His disciples, "See to it that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many." The apostle Paul also warns against being deceived by empty words and false doctrines (Ephesians 5:6).

In summary, the Bible consistently portrays violence and deception as behaviors that are contrary to the will of God and detrimental to human relationships. Believers are called to reject these behaviors and to pursue peace, truth, and righteousness in their lives.
