Ephraim and Manasseh in Biblical Context

Ephraim and Manasseh were the two sons of Joseph, born to him in Egypt by Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of On (Genesis 41:50-52). These two sons were later adopted by Jacob as his own, effectively granting them the status of tribal patriarchs alongside Jacob's other sons (Genesis 48:5). This adoption was significant, as it elevated Ephraim and Manasseh to the status of full tribes within Israel, each receiving a portion of the Promised Land.

Scorning and Mocking in the Bible

Scorning and mocking are behaviors frequently condemned in the Scriptures. They are often associated with pride, arrogance, and a rejection of wisdom and righteousness. Proverbs 21:24 states, "Proud, Arrogant, and Mocker are the names of him who acts with excessive pride." Such behaviors are seen as antithetical to the fear of the Lord, which is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10).

Ephraim and Manasseh: Instances of Scorn and Mockery

The tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh, though blessed by Jacob, are not exempt from the biblical narrative's exploration of human failings, including scorn and mockery. The tribe of Ephraim, in particular, is noted for its pride and contentiousness. In Judges 8:1 , the men of Ephraim confront Gideon with anger because they were not called to fight against Midian, demonstrating a spirit of pride and contention: "Then the men of Ephraim said to him, 'Why have you done this to us, not calling us to go and fight against Midian?' And they contended with him violently."

Similarly, in Judges 12:1-6, the Ephraimites again display a contentious spirit when they confront Jephthah for not including them in the battle against the Ammonites. Their scornful attitude leads to a tragic conflict, resulting in the death of many Ephraimites. This incident highlights the destructive nature of pride and mockery, as it leads to division and strife among the people of God.

Prophetic Rebuke and Consequences

The prophets also address the scornful behavior of Ephraim. In Hosea 7:8-10 , Ephraim is described as mixing with the nations and being like a "cake unturned," symbolizing their incomplete devotion and prideful alliances with foreign nations. The prophet Isaiah also speaks against Ephraim's pride and arrogance in Isaiah 28:1-3 , warning of impending judgment: "Woe to the majestic crown of Ephraim’s drunkards, to the fading flower of its glorious splendor, set on the summit above the fertile valley, the pride of those overcome by wine."

Lessons from Ephraim and Manasseh

The narratives involving Ephraim and Manasseh serve as cautionary tales about the dangers of scorn and mockery. These behaviors are not only offensive to God but also lead to division and destruction within the community of believers. The accounts of these tribes remind us of the importance of humility, unity, and the pursuit of righteousness, as opposed to pride and derision. The biblical account encourages believers to seek wisdom and understanding, avoiding the pitfalls of scornful and mocking attitudes that can lead to spiritual and communal downfall.

So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh even to Zebulun: but they laughed them to scorn, and mocked them.
