Those Who Went to Egypt

Topical Encyclopedia
Throughout the biblical narrative, Egypt serves as a significant geographical and symbolic location. It is often depicted as a place of refuge, testing, and sometimes bondage. Several key figures and groups in the Bible journeyed to Egypt, each with distinct purposes and outcomes.

Abraham and Sarah
Abraham, originally Abram, and his wife Sarah, originally Sarai, were among the first to journey to Egypt. During a severe famine in Canaan, Abram went down to Egypt to reside there temporarily (Genesis 12:10). Fearing for his life due to Sarah's beauty, Abram instructed her to say she was his sister. Pharaoh took Sarah into his palace, but God intervened, afflicting Pharaoh and his household with plagues. Upon discovering the truth, Pharaoh returned Sarah to Abram and sent them away with their possessions (Genesis 12:11-20).

Joseph
Joseph, the son of Jacob, was sold into slavery by his brothers and taken to Egypt (Genesis 37:28). Through a series of divinely orchestrated events, Joseph rose to become the second most powerful man in Egypt, serving as Pharaoh's vizier. His position allowed him to save Egypt and his own family from a severe famine. Joseph's account is a testament to God's providence and the fulfillment of His promises (Genesis 41:39-41).

Jacob and His Family
During the famine, Jacob, also known as Israel, sent his sons to Egypt to buy grain. Eventually, Joseph revealed his identity to his brothers and invited Jacob and the entire family to settle in Egypt. Pharaoh granted them the land of Goshen, where they prospered and multiplied (Genesis 46:1-7, 47:11-12). This migration set the stage for the Israelites' eventual enslavement and the Exodus.

Moses
Moses, born to Hebrew parents during a time of oppression, was placed in a basket on the Nile River to escape Pharaoh's decree to kill all Hebrew male infants. He was found and adopted by Pharaoh's daughter, growing up in the Egyptian royal household (Exodus 2:1-10). After killing an Egyptian, Moses fled to Midian, but God later called him to return to Egypt to lead the Israelites out of bondage (Exodus 3:10).

Jeremiah and the Remnant
After the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon, a remnant of Judah fled to Egypt against God's command, taking the prophet Jeremiah with them (Jeremiah 43:1-7). Despite Jeremiah's warnings, they settled in Egypt, where they continued to practice idolatry. This disobedience led to further judgment, as prophesied by Jeremiah (Jeremiah 44:1-14).

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
In the New Testament, Egypt again serves as a place of refuge. After the birth of Jesus, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream, instructing him to take Mary and the child to Egypt to escape King Herod's massacre of infants in Bethlehem (Matthew 2:13-15). This journey fulfilled the prophecy, "Out of Egypt I called My Son" (Hosea 11:1; Matthew 2:15).

Symbolism and Themes
Egypt is often symbolic of worldly power and temptation, as well as a place of refuge and divine intervention. The journeys to and from Egypt highlight themes of faith, obedience, and God's sovereignty in guiding and protecting His people. These narratives underscore the tension between reliance on human strength and trust in God's promises.
