The Tenth

The concept of "The Tenth," commonly referred to as the "tithe," is a significant biblical principle that involves giving a portion of one's income or produce to God. This practice is deeply rooted in the Old Testament and carries theological and practical implications for believers.

Old Testament Foundations

The practice of tithing is first mentioned in the Book of Genesis. Abraham, after rescuing Lot and defeating the kings, gave a tenth of everything to Melchizedek, the king of Salem and priest of God Most High (Genesis 14:18-20). This act of giving a tenth is seen as an acknowledgment of God's sovereignty and provision.

Jacob also vowed to give a tenth to God, as recorded in Genesis 28:20-22 , where he promised, "Of all that You give me, I will surely give a tenth to You." This vow was made after his vision of the ladder reaching to heaven, symbolizing his commitment to God in response to divine revelation and blessing.

The Mosaic Law formalized the practice of tithing for the Israelites. Leviticus 27:30 states, "Thus any tithe of the land, whether from the seed of the land or the fruit of the trees, belongs to the LORD; it is holy to the LORD." The tithe was primarily agricultural, consisting of produce from the land and livestock, and was intended to support the Levitical priesthood, the poor, and religious festivals (Numbers 18:21-24, Deuteronomy 14:28-29).

Prophetic Emphasis

The prophets reinforced the importance of tithing as an expression of faithfulness to God. Malachi 3:8-10 presents a strong admonition: "Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me! But you ask, ‘How do we rob You?’ In tithes and offerings. You are cursed with a curse, yet you—the whole nation—are still robbing Me. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house. Test Me in this," says the LORD of Hosts. "See if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour out for you blessing without measure." This passage underscores the spiritual and material blessings associated with faithful tithing.

New Testament Perspective

In the New Testament, the principle of tithing is not explicitly commanded, but the spirit of generosity and support for the ministry is emphasized. Jesus acknowledges the practice of tithing among the Pharisees but criticizes them for neglecting justice, mercy, and faithfulness, stating, "You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former" (Matthew 23:23). This indicates that while tithing is commendable, it should not overshadow the weightier matters of the law.

The Apostle Paul, while not specifically mentioning tithing, encourages generous giving. In 2 Corinthians 9:7 , he writes, "Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver." This reflects the New Testament emphasis on voluntary and joyful giving as an act of worship and support for the church and its mission.

Theological Implications

The practice of tithing is seen as an acknowledgment of God's ownership over all creation and a believer's stewardship of resources. It serves as a tangible expression of faith, gratitude, and dependence on God. Tithing also fosters a sense of community and responsibility, as it supports the work of the church and aids those in need.

In summary, "The Tenth" or tithe is a biblical principle with deep roots in the Old Testament, affirmed by the prophets, and given a broader context of generosity in the New Testament. It remains a significant aspect of Christian stewardship and worship.
