The Source of Conflict

In the biblical narrative, the source of conflict is deeply rooted in the spiritual and moral dimensions of human existence. The Bible presents conflict as originating from the fall of humanity and the subsequent entrance of sin into the world. This entry explores the biblical understanding of conflict, its origins, and its manifestations as depicted in Scripture.

The Fall and the Entrance of Sin

The Genesis account provides the foundational explanation for the source of conflict. In Genesis 3, the disobedience of Adam and Eve introduces sin into the world, resulting in a fractured relationship between humanity and God, as well as between individuals. Genesis 3:16-19 describes the consequences of the fall, including pain, toil, and strife, which become inherent aspects of human life. The fall marks the beginning of conflict, as humanity's perfect harmony with God and creation is disrupted.

Human Nature and Sin

The Bible consistently portrays human nature as inherently sinful, contributing to conflict. Jeremiah 17:9 states, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" This verse highlights the internal source of conflict within the human heart, which is prone to deceit and wickedness. James 4:1-2 further elaborates on this theme: "What causes conflicts and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from the passions at war within you? You crave what you do not have; you kill and covet, but are unable to obtain it. You quarrel and fight." Here, James identifies the internal desires and passions as the root causes of external conflicts.

Spiritual Warfare

The Bible also presents conflict as a spiritual battle between the forces of good and evil. Ephesians 6:12 emphasizes this spiritual dimension: "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world’s darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." This passage underscores the reality that conflict is not merely a human issue but is influenced by spiritual forces opposed to God's purposes.

Pride and Selfishness

Pride and selfishness are frequently cited as sources of conflict in Scripture. Proverbs 13:10 states, "Arrogance leads only to strife, but wisdom is with the well-advised." Pride, as an elevation of self above others, naturally leads to discord and division. Philippians 2:3-4 encourages believers to adopt a posture of humility: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." This call to humility and selflessness is presented as a remedy to conflict.

The Role of Satan

Satan, as the adversary, plays a significant role in instigating conflict. In John 8:44, Jesus describes Satan as "a murderer from the beginning" and "the father of lies." His deceitful nature and opposition to God's truth contribute to the perpetuation of conflict. Revelation 12:9 depicts Satan as the one who "leads the whole world astray," highlighting his influence in sowing discord and division among humanity.

The Hope of Reconciliation

While the Bible acknowledges the pervasive nature of conflict, it also offers hope for reconciliation through Jesus Christ. Colossians 1:19-20 declares, "For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile to Himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through the blood of His cross." The redemptive work of Christ provides the means for restoring broken relationships and overcoming the source of conflict.

In summary, the Bible presents the source of conflict as multifaceted, involving the fall of humanity, the sinful nature of the human heart, spiritual warfare, pride, and the influence of Satan. These elements contribute to the ongoing struggle and discord experienced in the world, while the hope of reconciliation through Christ offers a path toward peace and restoration.
