The Sanctity of God's Anointed

The concept of the sanctity of God's anointed is a significant theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing the divine selection and consecration of individuals for specific roles and purposes within God's plan. This sanctity underscores the respect and reverence due to those whom God has chosen, whether they be kings, prophets, or priests.

Old Testament Foundations

The idea of God's anointed is prominently featured in the Old Testament, particularly in the context of the monarchy. The Hebrew term "mashiach," meaning "anointed one," is used to describe those set apart by God for leadership. The anointing with oil was a symbolic act signifying the Holy Spirit's empowerment and God's approval.

One of the earliest references to the sanctity of God's anointed is found in the account of King Saul. In 1 Samuel 10:1, Samuel anoints Saul as the first king of Israel: "Then Samuel took a flask of oil, poured it on Saul’s head, kissed him, and said, 'Has not the LORD anointed you ruler over His inheritance?'" . Despite Saul's later disobedience, David, who was also anointed by Samuel, consistently respected Saul's position as God's anointed. David's refusal to harm Saul, even when given the opportunity, is a testament to his reverence for the sanctity of God's anointed. In 1 Samuel 24:6, David declares, "The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed. May I never lift my hand against him, since he is the LORD’s anointed" .

The anointing of David himself further illustrates this concept. In 1 Samuel 16:13, Samuel anoints David in the presence of his brothers, and "from that day on, the Spirit of the LORD came powerfully upon David" . This anointing set David apart as the future king and established his legitimacy and divine favor.

Prophets and Priests

The sanctity of God's anointed extends beyond kings to include prophets and priests. Prophets, like Elijah and Elisha, were often seen as God's anointed messengers, carrying His word to the people. In 1 Kings 19:16, God instructs Elijah to anoint Elisha as his successor, signifying the transfer of prophetic authority.

Priests, too, were anointed for their sacred duties. The consecration of Aaron and his sons as priests is described in Exodus 28-29, where they are anointed with oil as a sign of their holy service to God. This anointing set them apart for the priestly ministry, emphasizing the sanctity of their role in mediating between God and the people.

Messianic Fulfillment

The ultimate fulfillment of the sanctity of God's anointed is found in Jesus Christ, the Messiah. The term "Christ" itself is derived from the Greek "Christos," meaning "anointed one." Jesus is recognized as the anointed King, Prophet, and Priest, fulfilling all the roles of God's anointed in one person. In Luke 4:18-19, Jesus reads from the scroll of Isaiah, declaring, "The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor" .

Respect and Reverence

The sanctity of God's anointed calls for respect and reverence towards those whom God has chosen. This principle is evident in the biblical narrative and serves as a reminder of the divine authority and purpose bestowed upon God's anointed. The anointing signifies not only a position of leadership but also a responsibility to act in accordance with God's will and purpose.
