The concept of the Sabbath originates in the creation narrative. In Genesis 2:2-3 , it is written: "By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished." This passage establishes the Sabbath as a divine institution, rooted in God's own rest after creation.

The Sabbath commandment is further articulated in the Ten Commandments. Exodus 20:8-11 states: "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God; on it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the foreigner within your gates. In Exodus 31:16-17 , it is written: "The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it as a lasting covenant for the generations to come. It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed."

The Sabbath also prefigures the rest and redemption found in Christ. Hebrews 4:9-10 states: "So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For whoever enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His."

Observance and Practice

In the Old Testament, the Sabbath was strictly observed by the Israelites, with prohibitions against work and commands to engage in worship and rest. Violations of the Sabbath were met with severe consequences, as seen in Exodus 31:14-15 : "You must keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it must surely be put to death; whoever does any work on that day must be cut off from his people. For six days work may be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the LORD."

In the New Testament, Jesus addressed the Sabbath, emphasizing its intended purpose for human benefit rather than legalistic burden. In Mark 2:27-28 , Jesus declared, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

Contemporary Observance

Among Christians, the observance of the Sabbath varies. Some denominations, such as Seventh-day Adventists, continue to observe the Sabbath on Saturday, the seventh day. Others, following the tradition of the early church, observe Sunday, the first day of the week, as the Lord's Day in commemoration of Christ's resurrection. This shift is supported by passages such as Acts 20:7 : "On the first day of the week we came together to break bread."
