The Sabbath: God: Will Have his Goodness Commemorated in the Observance of

The Sabbath, a day of rest and worship, is a central theme in the biblical narrative, serving as a perpetual reminder of God's goodness and His covenant with His people. The observance of the Sabbath is deeply rooted in the creation account and the laws given to Israel, reflecting God's desire for His goodness to be commemorated by His people.

Creation and the Sabbath

The origin of the Sabbath is found in the creation account in Genesis. After six days of creation, God rested on the seventh day, setting a divine precedent for rest and sanctification. Genesis 2:2-3 states, "By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on that day He rested from all His work. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because on that day He rested from all the work of creation that He had accomplished." This act of resting and sanctifying the seventh day underscores the goodness of God's creation and His desire for humanity to partake in His rest.

The Sabbath in the Law

The Sabbath is further enshrined in the Ten Commandments, where it is presented as a day of rest and remembrance. Exodus 20:8-11 commands, "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the foreigner within your gates. For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but on the seventh day He rested. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and set it apart as holy." This commandment not only calls for rest but also serves as a commemoration of God's creative work and His benevolent provision.

The Sabbath as a Sign of the Covenant

The Sabbath is also a sign of the covenant between God and Israel. In Exodus 31:16-17 , it is written, "The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it as a lasting covenant for the generations to come. It is a sign between Me and the Israelites forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed." The observance of the Sabbath is thus a perpetual reminder of God's faithfulness and His covenantal relationship with His people.

The Sabbath and God's Provision

The Sabbath also highlights God's provision and care for His people. In Deuteronomy 5:12-15 , the command to observe the Sabbath is linked to the Israelites' deliverance from Egypt: "Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day." This connection emphasizes God's goodness in delivering His people and providing them with rest and freedom.

The Sabbath in the Prophets

The prophets also speak to the significance of the Sabbath as a time to honor God and experience His goodness. Isaiah 58:13-14 encourages, "If you turn your foot from breaking the Sabbath, from doing as you please on My holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’s holy day honorable, if you honor it by not going your own way or seeking your own pleasure or speaking idle words, then you will delight yourself in the LORD, and I will make you ride on the heights of the land and feed you with the heritage of your father Jacob. For the mouth of the LORD has spoken." Here, the Sabbath is portrayed as a delight and an opportunity to experience the fullness of God's blessings.

The Sabbath in the New Testament

In the New Testament, Jesus affirms the goodness of the Sabbath while challenging legalistic interpretations. In Mark 2:27-28 , Jesus declares, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath." This statement underscores the Sabbath's purpose as a gift from God, intended for the well-being and spiritual renewal of His people.

The observance of the Sabbath, therefore, stands as a testament to God's goodness, His creative power, His covenantal faithfulness, and His provision for His people. Through the Sabbath, believers are invited to rest in God's presence, remember His mighty works, and celebrate His enduring goodness.
