The Request for Water

Topical Encyclopedia
The Request for Water is a significant event in the biblical narrative, illustrating both the physical needs of the Israelites during their wilderness journey and the spiritual lessons of faith and obedience. This event is recorded in the books of Exodus and Numbers, highlighting the Israelites' dependence on God for sustenance and the leadership challenges faced by Moses.

Exodus 17:1-7

The first account of the Israelites' request for water occurs at Rephidim, as described in Exodus 17:1-7. After departing from the Desert of Sin, the Israelites camped at Rephidim, where there was no water for the people to drink. The people quarreled with Moses, demanding, "Give us water to drink" (Exodus 17:2). Moses, recognizing the gravity of the situation, cried out to the LORD, fearing the people's anger might lead to violence against him.

The LORD instructed Moses to take some of the elders of Israel and his staff, with which he had struck the Nile, and go to the rock at Horeb. God promised to stand before Moses on the rock, and Moses was to strike the rock, resulting in water flowing out for the people to drink. Moses obeyed, and water gushed forth, quenching the thirst of the Israelites. This place was named Massah (testing) and Meribah (quarreling) because the Israelites tested the LORD by questioning, "Is the LORD among us or not?" (Exodus 17:7).

Numbers 20:1-13

A similar event is recounted in Numbers 20:1-13, occurring later in the Israelites' journey, at Kadesh in the Desert of Zin. Here, the community again faced a lack of water, leading to complaints against Moses and Aaron. The people lamented their situation, expressing regret for leaving Egypt and questioning why they were brought to this barren place.

Moses and Aaron sought the LORD's guidance at the Tent of Meeting, where the glory of the LORD appeared to them. God instructed Moses to take the staff and, with Aaron, gather the assembly. Moses was to speak to the rock before their eyes, and it would yield its water. However, in a moment of frustration, Moses struck the rock twice with his staff instead of speaking to it, as commanded. Water still flowed abundantly, but Moses' actions displeased the LORD.

The LORD declared that because Moses and Aaron did not trust Him enough to honor Him as holy in the sight of the Israelites, they would not lead the assembly into the Promised Land. This place was also called Meribah, reflecting the Israelites' contention and the LORD's demonstration of His holiness (Numbers 20:13).

Theological Significance

The Request for Water episodes underscore the themes of divine provision, human frailty, and the importance of obedience to God's commands. The Israelites' repeated grumbling highlights their struggle with faith and trust in God's promises, despite witnessing His miraculous interventions. Moses' actions at Kadesh serve as a sobering reminder of the consequences of disobedience, even for a leader as faithful as Moses.

These narratives also foreshadow the spiritual sustenance provided by Christ, the "living water" (John 4:10), who satisfies the deepest thirst of the human soul. The Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 10:4, identifies the rock that provided water as a symbol of Christ, emphasizing the continuity of God's redemptive plan throughout Scripture.
