The Intimidation of the Enemy

Topical Encyclopedia
The concept of the intimidation of the enemy is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, illustrating the tactics used by adversaries to instill fear and doubt among the people of God. This intimidation often serves as a test of faith, challenging believers to rely on God's strength and promises rather than succumbing to fear.

Old Testament Instances

1. Goliath and the Israelites: One of the most vivid examples of intimidation is found in the account of David and Goliath. The Philistine giant, Goliath, taunted the armies of Israel, causing them to tremble in fear. "When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid" (1 Samuel 17:11). Goliath's intimidation was designed to paralyze the Israelites, but David's faith in God enabled him to confront and defeat the giant, demonstrating that reliance on God can overcome fear.

2. The Spies and the Promised Land: In Numbers 13, the twelve spies sent to scout the Promised Land returned with reports that intimidated the Israelites. Ten of the spies described the inhabitants as giants, saying, "We seemed like grasshoppers in our own sight, and we must have seemed the same to them" (Numbers 13:33). This report led to widespread fear and rebellion against God's command to take the land, highlighting how intimidation can lead to disobedience and a lack of trust in God's promises.

3. Sennacherib's Threats: In 2 Kings 18-19, the Assyrian king Sennacherib sent messengers to intimidate King Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem. The Rabshakeh, Sennacherib's envoy, mocked their trust in God, saying, "Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he cannot deliver you" (2 Kings 18:29). Hezekiah's response was to seek the Lord in prayer, and God delivered Jerusalem, demonstrating His power over the threats of the enemy.

New Testament Insights

1. Satan's Temptations: In the New Testament, Satan's attempts to intimidate are evident in the temptations of Jesus. In the wilderness, Satan sought to undermine Jesus' mission by challenging His identity and authority (Matthew 4:1-11). Jesus countered these intimidations with Scripture, showing that the Word of God is a powerful tool against the enemy's tactics.

2. Persecution of the Early Church: The early Christians faced intimidation through persecution, as seen in the book of Acts. The apostles were threatened and commanded not to speak in the name of Jesus. However, they prayed for boldness and continued to preach the gospel, saying, "We must obey God rather than men" (Acts 5:29). Their courage in the face of intimidation serves as an example of steadfast faith.

Spiritual Warfare

The intimidation of the enemy is a key aspect of spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 reminds believers that "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this world's darkness, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms." Christians are called to put on the full armor of God to stand firm against these tactics (Ephesians 6:13-17).

Faith and Courage

Throughout Scripture, the response to intimidation is faith and courage rooted in God's promises. Joshua 1:9 exhorts believers, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." This assurance of God's presence empowers believers to face intimidation with confidence, knowing that victory is found in Him.
