Sanctification and Awe

Sanctification is a fundamental concept in Christian theology, referring to the process by which believers are set apart for God's purposes and transformed into the likeness of Christ. This process is both instantaneous and progressive, beginning at the moment of salvation and continuing throughout the believer's life.

The New Testament frequently addresses sanctification. In 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4, Paul writes, "For it is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable." Here, sanctification is presented as God's will for believers, emphasizing moral purity and self-control.

Sanctification is both a divine act and a human responsibility. Hebrews 10:10 states, "And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all." This verse highlights the completed work of Christ as the basis for sanctification. However, believers are also called to actively pursue holiness. In 2 Corinthians 7:1, Paul exhorts, "Therefore, beloved, since we have these promises, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that defiles body and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in sanctification, empowering believers to live in accordance with God's will. Romans 15:16 speaks of "the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit," indicating that the Spirit is the agent of transformation in the believer's life.

Sanctification is closely linked to the concept of holiness. In 1 Peter 1:15-16, believers are called to be holy in all their conduct, "for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'" This call to holiness reflects God's own nature and serves as the standard for Christian living.

Awe

Awe, in the biblical context, refers to a profound reverence and respect for God, often accompanied by a sense of wonder and amazement at His majesty and power. This attitude is foundational to the worship and fear of the Lord, which is a recurring theme throughout Scripture.

The Bible frequently describes the appropriate response to God's presence and works as one of awe. In Psalm 33:8, the psalmist declares, "Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere Him." This verse captures the universal call to recognize God's greatness and respond with reverence.

Awe is often associated with the fear of the Lord, a concept that encompasses both reverence and obedience. Proverbs 9:10 states, "The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Here, awe is linked to wisdom and understanding, suggesting that a proper view of God is foundational to a life of faith.

The New Testament also emphasizes the importance of awe in the believer's life. In Hebrews 12:28-29, the author writes, "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire." This passage underscores the gravity and seriousness of worship, rooted in a deep respect for God's holiness and power.

Awe is not only a response to God's majesty but also to His works and acts of salvation. In Exodus 15:11, after the deliverance from Egypt, Moses and the Israelites sing, "Who among the gods is like You, O LORD? Who is like You—majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?" This expression of awe reflects the recognition of God's unparalleled power and faithfulness.

In summary, awe is an essential aspect of the believer's relationship with God, fostering a deep sense of reverence, worship, and obedience. It is a recognition of God's infinite greatness and a response to His mighty works and holy character.
