Sanctification

Sanctification is a fundamental concept in Christian theology, referring to the process by which believers are set apart for God's purposes and transformed into the likeness of Christ. This transformation is both a definitive act and a progressive journey. The term "sanctification" is derived from the Greek word "hagiasmos," which means holiness or consecration.

In the New Testament, sanctification is presented as a work of the Holy Spirit. In 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 , Paul writes, "For it is God’s will that you should be sanctified: You should avoid sexual immorality; each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable." This passage underscores the moral and ethical dimensions of sanctification, emphasizing purity and self-control as aspects of a sanctified life.

Sanctification is also seen as a positional reality for believers. In 1 Corinthians 1:2 , Paul addresses the church in Corinth as "those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be saints." Here, sanctification is an accomplished fact for those who are in Christ, indicating their status as holy and set apart.

The process of sanctification involves both divine initiative and human responsibility. Philippians 2:12-13 captures this dynamic: "Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence but now even more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good pleasure." Believers are called to actively pursue holiness while relying on God's power to effect change within them.

Belief in the Truth

Belief in the truth is a central tenet of the Christian faith, emphasizing the importance of faith in the revealed Word of God. The truth, as understood in Scripture, is not merely a set of propositions but is personified in Jesus Christ, who declared, "I am the way and the truth and the life" (John 14:6).

The New Testament frequently links belief in the truth with salvation. In 2 Thessalonians 2:13 , Paul writes, "But we should always thank God for you, brothers who are loved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning to be saved by the sanctification of the Spirit and by faith in the truth." This passage highlights the interplay between divine election, sanctification, and belief in the truth as components of the salvation experience.

Belief in the truth is also associated with the reception of the gospel message. In Ephesians 1:13 , Paul states, "And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit." Here, belief in the truth is the means by which individuals enter into a saving relationship with God and receive the Holy Spirit as a seal of their redemption.

The call to believe in the truth is a call to embrace the entirety of God's revelation, as found in Scripture. In John 17:17 , Jesus prays for His disciples, saying, "Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth." This prayer underscores the transformative power of God's Word in the life of the believer, as it is through engagement with the truth that sanctification is realized.
