Revival as a Gift

Topical Encyclopedia
Revival, in the context of Christian theology, refers to a period of renewed spiritual interest and commitment, both individually and corporately, often accompanied by a profound sense of the presence of God. It is considered a divine intervention where the Holy Spirit invigorates believers, leading to repentance, renewed faith, and a deeper commitment to God's purposes. Revival is seen as a gift from God, a sovereign act that cannot be manufactured by human effort but is earnestly sought through prayer and repentance.

Biblical Foundations

The concept of revival is deeply rooted in Scripture, where God repeatedly calls His people back to Himself. In the Old Testament, the cycle of Israel's faithfulness, apostasy, and subsequent revival is a recurring theme. One of the most notable examples is found in 2 Chronicles 7:14, where God promises Solomon, "if My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land."

The Psalms also echo the cry for revival. Psalm 85:6 pleads, "Will You not revive us again, that Your people may rejoice in You?" This verse captures the essence of revival as a return to joy and spiritual vitality through God's intervention.

In the New Testament, the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2 is often cited as a quintessential example of revival. The Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles, empowering them to preach the gospel with boldness, resulting in the conversion of about three thousand souls. This event marks the birth of the early church and demonstrates the transformative power of the Holy Spirit in bringing about revival.

Characteristics of Revival

Revival is characterized by several key elements:

1. Conviction of Sin: A hallmark of revival is a deep awareness of personal and corporate sin, leading to genuine repentance. In Acts 2:37, after Peter's sermon, the crowd was "cut to the heart" and asked, "Brothers, what shall we do?" This conviction is a work of the Holy Spirit, prompting believers to turn back to God.

2. Renewed Worship and Prayer: Revival often results in a heightened desire for worship and prayer. Believers seek God's presence with renewed fervor, as seen in Acts 4:31, where the early Christians prayed, and "the place where they were assembled was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly."

3. Increased Evangelism: A revived church is a witnessing church. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit compels believers to share the gospel with others. Acts 1:8 records Jesus' promise, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

4. Social Transformation: Revival often leads to societal change as transformed individuals impact their communities. The early church's influence in Acts 2:44-47, where believers shared everything in common and enjoyed the favor of all the people, exemplifies this transformation.

Seeking Revival

While revival is a sovereign act of God, Scripture encourages believers to seek it earnestly. James 4:8 exhorts, "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." This pursuit involves humility, prayer, and a willingness to turn from sin. The promise of revival is not limited to a specific time or place but is available to all who earnestly seek God's face.

Throughout church history, revivals have often begun with a small group of believers committed to prayer and holiness. The Great Awakenings in America and the Welsh Revival are examples of how God has used such movements to bring about widespread spiritual renewal.

In summary, revival as a gift is a profound expression of God's grace, renewing His people and advancing His kingdom purposes. It is a reminder of the transformative power of the Holy Spirit and the ongoing need for believers to seek God's presence with humility and expectation.
