The resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ are a foundational element of Christian faith, affirming His victory over death and His divine nature. These appearances occurred after His crucifixion and burial, as documented in the New Testament. They serve as a testament to His resurrection, providing evidence to His disciples and followers that He had indeed risen from the dead, as He had foretold.
The Empty TombThe first indication of Jesus' resurrection was the discovery of the empty tomb. On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went to the tomb to anoint Jesus' body with spices. They found the stone rolled away and the tomb empty. An angel announced to them, "He is not here; He has risen, just as He said" (
Matthew 28:6).
Appearances to Mary Magdalene and the WomenJesus first appeared to Mary Magdalene, who initially did not recognize Him. Upon realizing it was Jesus, she went to tell the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" (
John 20:18). Jesus also appeared to the other women who had visited the tomb, instructing them to inform His disciples of His resurrection (
Matthew 28:9-10).
Appearance to the Disciples on the Road to EmmausOn the same day, Jesus appeared to two of His followers on the road to Emmaus. Initially, they did not recognize Him. As He explained the Scriptures concerning Himself, their hearts burned within them. It was only when He broke bread with them that their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him (
Luke 24:13-35).
Appearance to the Disciples in JerusalemJesus appeared to His disciples in Jerusalem, where they were gathered in fear. He stood among them and said, "Peace be with you" (
John 20:19). To dispel their doubts, He showed them His hands and side. Thomas, who was not present at this appearance, later expressed doubt. Jesus appeared again when Thomas was present, inviting him to touch His wounds, leading Thomas to proclaim, "My Lord and my God!" (
John 20:28).
Appearance by the Sea of GalileeJesus appeared to seven of His disciples by the Sea of Galilee. After a miraculous catch of fish, He shared a meal with them. During this appearance, Jesus reinstated Peter, asking him three times, "Do you love Me?" and instructing him to "Feed My sheep" (
John 21:15-17).
The Great CommissionJesus appeared to His disciples on a mountain in Galilee, where He gave them the Great Commission: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you" (
Matthew 28:19-20).
Appearance to Over 500 PeopleThe Apostle Paul, in his first letter to the Corinthians, mentions that Jesus appeared to more than 500 people at one time, most of whom were still alive at the time of his writing (
1 Corinthians 15:6). This appearance provided a substantial number of witnesses to the resurrection.
Final Appearance and AscensionJesus' final appearance to His disciples occurred at the Mount of Olives. He instructed them to wait in Jerusalem for the Holy Spirit. As He blessed them, He was taken up into heaven, and a cloud hid Him from their sight. Two angels appeared, assuring the disciples that Jesus would return in the same manner (
Acts 1:9-11).
These resurrection appearances not only confirmed Jesus' triumph over death but also empowered His followers to spread the Gospel, laying the foundation for the Christian Church.
