The resurrection appearances of Jesus Christ are a foundational element of Christian faith, affirming the reality of His victory over death and His divine nature. These appearances are documented in the New Testament and serve as a testament to the truth of the resurrection, providing hope and assurance to believers.
1. Mary Magdalene and the Women at the TombThe first recorded appearance of the resurrected Christ was to Mary Magdalene and other women who visited the tomb early on the first day of the week. According to the Gospel of Matthew, "Suddenly Jesus met them and said, 'Greetings!' They came to Him, grasped His feet, and worshiped Him" (
Matthew 28:9). This encounter emphasizes the role of women as the first witnesses to the resurrection, a significant detail in the cultural context of the time.
2. The Disciples on the Road to EmmausIn the Gospel of Luke, Jesus appears to two disciples traveling to the village of Emmaus. Initially, they do not recognize Him. As they walk, Jesus explains the Scriptures concerning Himself. It is only when He breaks bread with them that their eyes are opened, and they recognize Him. "Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him—and He disappeared from their sight" (
Luke 24:31). This appearance highlights the fulfillment of prophecy and the importance of Scripture in understanding the resurrection.
3. Appearance to the Disciples (Without Thomas)On the evening of the resurrection day, Jesus appears to His disciples who are gathered behind locked doors for fear of the Jews. He offers them peace and shows them His hands and side. "Jesus came and stood among them and said, 'Peace be with you.' After He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side" (
John 20:19-20). This appearance underscores the physical reality of the resurrection, as Jesus invites them to see and touch His wounds.
4. Appearance to ThomasA week later, Jesus appears again to His disciples, this time with Thomas present. Thomas, who had doubted the previous reports, is invited to touch Jesus' wounds. "Then He said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here and look at My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Stop doubting and believe'" (
John 20:27). Thomas' subsequent declaration, "My Lord and my God!" (
John 20:28), affirms the divinity of Christ and the reality of His resurrection.
5. Appearance by the Sea of GalileeIn
John 21, Jesus appears to seven of His disciples by the Sea of Galilee. After a miraculous catch of fish, Jesus shares a meal with them. This appearance is significant for the reinstatement of Peter, as Jesus asks him three times, "Do you love Me?" (
John 21:15-17), paralleling Peter's three denials. This encounter emphasizes forgiveness and the commissioning of Peter to shepherd Christ's followers.
6. The Great CommissionIn
Matthew 28:16-20, Jesus appears to His disciples on a mountain in Galilee, where He gives them the Great Commission. "Then Jesus came to them and said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations...'" (
Matthew 28:18-19). This appearance underscores the global mission of the Church and the authority of Christ.
7. Appearance to Over 500The Apostle Paul, in his first letter to the Corinthians, mentions that Jesus appeared to more than 500 brethren at one time. "After that, He appeared to more than five hundred brothers at once, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep" (
1 Corinthians 15:6). This appearance provides a broad witness to the resurrection, reinforcing its historical credibility.
8. Appearance to James and the ApostlesPaul also notes that Jesus appeared to James, His brother, and then to all the apostles (
1 Corinthians 15:7). This appearance to James, who later became a leader in the Jerusalem church, is significant for the transformation it brought about in his life, from skepticism to faith.
9. The AscensionThe final appearance of the resurrected Christ occurs at the Ascension. In
Acts 1:9-11, Jesus is taken up into heaven before the eyes of His disciples. This event marks the end of His earthly appearances and the beginning of His exalted reign at the right hand of the Father. The angels present assure the disciples of His return, providing hope for the future.
These resurrection appearances collectively affirm the truth of the resurrection, the transformation of the disciples, and the commissioning of the Church to continue Christ's mission on earth. They serve as a cornerstone for Christian belief, offering assurance of eternal life through faith in the risen Lord.
