Reflecting on our attitude is a vital aspect of Christian living, as it directly influences our relationship with God, others, and ourselves. The Bible provides numerous insights into the importance of maintaining a Christ-like attitude, emphasizing humility, gratitude, and love.

Humility

Humility is a cornerstone of a godly attitude. The Bible consistently calls believers to adopt a humble spirit, recognizing our dependence on God. In Philippians 2:3-4 , Paul exhorts, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." This passage highlights the importance of prioritizing others and setting aside personal pride.

Jesus Himself exemplified ultimate humility. Philippians 2:5-8 states, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." Reflecting on Christ's humility encourages believers to adopt a similar attitude of selflessness and service.

Gratitude

A grateful heart is another essential component of a godly attitude. The Bible encourages believers to cultivate thankfulness in all circumstances. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 , Paul writes, "Rejoice at all times. Pray without ceasing. Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus." Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to the abundant blessings God has provided, fostering contentment and joy.

The Psalms are replete with expressions of gratitude. Psalm 100:4 instructs, "Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and bless His name." This verse underscores the importance of approaching God with a thankful heart, acknowledging His goodness and faithfulness.

Love

Love is the defining characteristic of a Christian attitude. Jesus emphasized love as the greatest commandment, stating in Matthew 22:37-39 , "‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’" Love for God and others should permeate every aspect of a believer's life.

The Apostle Paul further elaborates on the nature of love in 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 : "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no account of wrongs. Love takes no pleasure in evil, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things." This passage provides a comprehensive description of love, serving as a guide for believers to reflect on and align their attitudes with.

Self-Examination

The Bible encourages believers to regularly examine their attitudes and actions. In 2 Corinthians 13:5 , Paul advises, "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Can’t you see for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?" Self-examination is crucial for identifying areas where our attitudes may not align with biblical principles, allowing for repentance and growth.

James 1:22-24 warns against self-deception, stating, "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only. Otherwise, you are deceiving yourselves. For anyone who hears the word but does not carry it out is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror, and after observing himself goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like." This passage emphasizes the importance of not only reflecting on our attitudes but also taking actionable steps to align them with God's Word.

Conclusion

Reflecting on our attitude is an ongoing process that requires humility, gratitude, love, and self-examination. By aligning our attitudes with biblical principles, we can grow in our relationship with God and others, becoming more like Christ in our daily lives.
