Prioritize Intimacy

In the context of Christian theology and practice, the concept of prioritizing intimacy primarily refers to the deep, personal relationship that believers are called to cultivate with God, as well as the meaningful connections they are encouraged to foster with others within the body of Christ. This entry explores the biblical foundation for prioritizing intimacy, its implications for personal and communal spiritual life, and its expression in the life of a believer.

Biblical Foundation

The Bible consistently emphasizes the importance of an intimate relationship with God. In the Old Testament, the Shema, found in Deuteronomy 6:4-5, commands, "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." This passage underscores the call to love God wholeheartedly, which is the essence of intimacy with Him.

In the New Testament, Jesus reiterates this commandment as the greatest, adding the importance of loving one's neighbor (Matthew 22:37-39): "Jesus declared, 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" Here, intimacy with God is directly linked to the love and intimacy shared among believers.

Intimacy with God

Intimacy with God involves knowing Him personally and experiencing His presence in daily life. The psalmist expresses a deep longing for God in Psalm 42:1-2 : "As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul longs after You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, the living God." This imagery captures the essence of a heart that prioritizes closeness with the Creator.

Jesus models this intimacy through His own relationship with the Father. In John 15:4-5 , He invites believers to "Remain in Me, and I will remain in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. I am the vine and you are the branches." This abiding relationship is foundational for spiritual growth and fruitfulness.

Intimacy with Others

The New Testament church exemplifies the importance of intimate relationships among believers. Acts 2:42 describes the early Christians: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer." This communal life reflects a commitment to deep, meaningful relationships that are centered on Christ.

The Apostle Paul, in his letters, frequently encourages believers to build one another up in love. In Ephesians 4:15-16 , he writes, "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head. From Him the whole body, fitted and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, through the work of each individual part." This passage highlights the necessity of prioritizing intimacy within the church for spiritual maturity and unity.

Practical Implications

Prioritizing intimacy with God and others requires intentionality and commitment. Spiritual disciplines such as prayer, meditation on Scripture, and worship are vital practices for nurturing one's relationship with God. James 4:8 encourages believers, "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you."

In relationships with others, prioritizing intimacy involves vulnerability, accountability, and sacrificial love. Hebrews 10:24-25 exhorts, "And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

In summary, prioritizing intimacy is a biblical mandate that encompasses both a personal relationship with God and a communal life with fellow believers. It is through these intimate connections that believers experience the fullness of life in Christ and reflect His love to the world.
