Priestly Garments as Symbols

Topical Encyclopedia
The priestly garments described in the Bible are rich with symbolic meaning, serving not only as attire for the priests but also as representations of spiritual truths and divine principles. These garments, detailed primarily in the books of Exodus and Leviticus, were worn by Aaron and his descendants, the Levitical priests, as they ministered before the Lord.

The Ephod and Breastpiece

The ephod, a key component of the high priest's attire, was made of gold, blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and fine linen (Exodus 28:6). It symbolized the priest's role as a mediator between God and the people. Attached to the ephod was the breastpiece of judgment, which held the Urim and Thummim, used for discerning God's will (Exodus 28:30). The breastpiece contained twelve stones, each engraved with the name of one of the tribes of Israel, signifying the high priest's representation of the entire nation before God (Exodus 28:21).

The Robe

The robe of the ephod was entirely blue, with pomegranates of blue, purple, and scarlet yarn, and gold bells around the hem (Exodus 28:31-34). The blue color is often associated with heaven and divine revelation, while the bells served a practical purpose, signaling the high priest's movements within the Holy Place. Symbolically, the bells and pomegranates represented the harmony and fruitfulness of a life lived in obedience to God.

The Turban and Plate

The high priest wore a turban with a gold plate inscribed with "Holy to the LORD" (Exodus 28:36-37). This inscription emphasized the consecration and holiness required of those who serve in God's presence. The turban itself, made of fine linen, symbolized purity and the covering of the mind with holiness.

The Tunic and Sash

The tunic, woven of fine linen, and the sash, embroidered with needlework, were worn by all priests (Exodus 28:39-40). The fine linen represented purity and righteousness, essential qualities for those ministering before God. The sash, binding the tunic, symbolized readiness for service and the strength found in unity and commitment to God's work.

The Linen Undergarments

The linen undergarments, worn to cover the priests' nakedness, were a reminder of the need for modesty and the covering of sin (Exodus 28:42). They underscored the importance of approaching God with reverence and humility, acknowledging human frailty and the need for divine grace.

Symbolism in the New Testament

In the New Testament, the symbolism of the priestly garments finds fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ, our Great High Priest. Hebrews 4:14-16 speaks of Jesus as the one who has passed through the heavens, offering believers direct access to God. The garments' symbolism of mediation, holiness, and service is embodied in Christ, who intercedes for us and calls believers to be a "royal priesthood" (1 Peter 2:9).

The priestly garments, with their intricate design and profound symbolism, serve as a visual representation of the spiritual truths central to the relationship between God and His people. They remind us of the holiness required in God's presence, the mediation provided through Christ, and the call to live lives of purity and service.
