Physical Affliction

Physical affliction, as understood within the biblical context, refers to the various forms of suffering and ailments that affect the human body. The Bible addresses physical affliction in numerous passages, offering insights into its causes, purposes, and the believer's response to it.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, physical affliction is often seen as a consequence of sin or disobedience. For instance, in Deuteronomy 28, God outlines the blessings for obedience and the curses for disobedience, which include various diseases and physical ailments: "The LORD will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation, with scorching heat and drought, with blight and mildew, which will plague you until you perish" (Deuteronomy 28:22).

However, physical affliction is not always a direct result of personal sin. The account of Job exemplifies this, as Job suffers immense physical affliction despite being described as "blameless and upright" (Job 1:1). His suffering serves as a test of faith and a demonstration of God's sovereignty.

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, physical affliction is often associated with the fallen state of the world and the presence of sin. Jesus' ministry frequently involved healing the sick, which demonstrated His compassion and divine authority. In Matthew 8:16-17, it is written: "When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to Him, and He drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'He took on our infirmities and carried our diseases'" .

The Apostle Paul also addresses physical affliction, acknowledging that it can serve a greater purpose in the life of a believer. In 2 Corinthians 12:7-10, Paul speaks of a "thorn in the flesh" given to him to prevent pride and to demonstrate God's power in weakness: "But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me" (2 Corinthians 12:9).

Purpose and Response

Physical affliction can serve as a means of spiritual growth and reliance on God. James 1:2-4 encourages believers to consider trials, including physical afflictions, as opportunities for joy and perseverance: "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance" .

Believers are also called to respond to physical affliction with prayer and faith. James 5:14-15 instructs: "Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick" .

Eternal Perspective

The Bible assures believers that physical affliction is temporary and that ultimate healing and restoration await in eternity. Revelation 21:4 offers hope: "He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the former things have passed away" . This eternal perspective encourages believers to endure present sufferings with the hope of future glory.
