Peace

In the biblical context, peace is a multifaceted concept that encompasses not only the absence of conflict but also the presence of harmony, wholeness, and well-being. The Hebrew word for peace, "shalom," and the Greek equivalent, "eirene," convey a sense of completeness and fulfillment. Peace is a central theme throughout the Scriptures, reflecting God's desire for His creation to live in harmony with Him and with one another.

The Bible presents God as the ultimate source of peace. In the Old Testament, God is often referred to as the "God of peace" (Judges 6:24). The prophetic literature anticipates the coming of the Messiah, who is called the "Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6). This title underscores the role of Jesus Christ in establishing peace between God and humanity through His sacrificial death and resurrection.

In the New Testament, Jesus emphasizes the importance of peace in His teachings. In the Beatitudes, He declares, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9). Jesus' ministry is marked by His efforts to reconcile individuals to God and to one another. He offers His peace to His followers, saying, "Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid" (John 14:27).

The Apostle Paul frequently addresses the theme of peace in his epistles. He exhorts believers to live in peace with one another and to pursue peace in their relationships. In Romans 12:18, he writes, "If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone" . Paul also highlights the role of the Holy Spirit in producing peace as a fruit in the lives of believers (Galatians 5:22).

Division

While peace is a divine ideal, the Bible also acknowledges the reality of division, both as a consequence of sin and as a result of allegiance to Christ. Division first appears in the biblical narrative with the fall of humanity, which introduces discord between God and man, as well as among individuals (Genesis 3).

Jesus Himself speaks of division as an inevitable outcome of His mission. In Matthew 10:34-36, He states, "Do not assume that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn 'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household'" . This passage highlights the divisive nature of the gospel, as it demands a choice that can separate even the closest of relationships.

The early church experienced division as it spread the message of Christ. The Book of Acts records numerous instances where the proclamation of the gospel led to conflict and division, both within Jewish communities and between Jews and Gentiles (Acts 13:45-46; Acts 17:5-9).

The Apostle Paul addresses the issue of division within the church, urging believers to maintain unity in the body of Christ. In 1 Corinthians 1:10, he appeals, "I urge you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree together, so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be united in mind and conviction" . Paul recognizes that while doctrinal and moral integrity must be upheld, believers are called to strive for unity and peace.
