Obedience and Approval

Obedience in the biblical context refers to the act of submitting to the commands, laws, and will of God. It is a central theme throughout the Scriptures, reflecting the relationship between God and His people. The concept of obedience is rooted in the understanding that God is sovereign and His commandments are given for the benefit and guidance of His creation.

In the Old Testament, obedience is often linked with the covenant relationship between God and Israel. The Israelites were called to obey God's laws as a sign of their faithfulness and devotion. Deuteronomy 11:1 states, "You shall therefore love the LORD your God and always keep His charge, His statutes, His ordinances, and His commandments." This verse underscores the connection between love for God and obedience to His commandments.

The account of Abraham is a profound example of obedience. In Genesis 22, God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham's willingness to obey, even in such a difficult command, demonstrates his faith and trust in God. As a result, God blesses Abraham, saying, "Because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you" (Genesis 22:16-17).

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ exemplifies perfect obedience. Philippians 2:8 describes Jesus as "being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." Jesus' obedience to the Father is the foundation of salvation for humanity, as His sacrifice on the cross fulfills the requirements of the law and provides a way for reconciliation with God.

Believers are called to follow Christ's example of obedience. In John 14:15 , Jesus says, "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." This statement highlights that obedience is an expression of love and commitment to Christ. The Apostle Paul further emphasizes this in Romans 6:16 , "Do you not know that when you offer yourselves as obedient slaves, you are slaves to the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin leading to death, or to obedience leading to righteousness?"

Approval

Approval in the biblical sense often refers to God's favor and acceptance of individuals or actions that align with His will and righteousness. It is closely related to the concept of divine blessing and is sought by believers as a sign of being in right standing with God.

In the Old Testament, God's approval is frequently associated with obedience and faithfulness. For instance, in 1 Samuel 15:22 , the prophet Samuel tells King Saul, "Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, obedience is better than sacrifice, and attentiveness is better than the fat of rams." This passage indicates that God's approval is not based on ritualistic practices but on genuine obedience to His commands.

The life of Noah is an example of receiving God's approval through righteousness. Genesis 6:8-9 states, "But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God." Noah's faithfulness and obedience amidst a corrupt world earned him God's approval and led to the preservation of his family during the flood.

In the New Testament, the concept of approval is often linked with faith in Jesus Christ. Hebrews 11:6 declares, "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him." Faith, therefore, is a key component in receiving God's approval, as it reflects trust and reliance on His promises.

The Apostle Paul speaks of seeking God's approval rather than human approval in Galatians 1:10 , "Am I now seeking the approval of men, or of God? Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ." This verse highlights the importance of prioritizing God's approval over the opinions and acceptance of others.

Ultimately, God's approval is granted through a life of faith, obedience, and alignment with His will, as believers strive to live in a manner that is pleasing to Him.
