Types of the Saviour: The Paschal Lamb

The concept of typology in biblical theology refers to the interpretation of certain events, persons, or institutions in the Old Testament as prefigurations or foreshadowings of Christ and His redemptive work in the New Testament. Among the most profound and significant types of the Saviour is the Paschal Lamb, which finds its roots in the Exodus narrative and is fulfilled in the person and work of Jesus Christ.

The Paschal Lamb in the Old Testament

The Paschal Lamb, or Passover Lamb, is first introduced in the book of Exodus during the account of the Israelites' deliverance from Egyptian bondage. God commanded Moses and Aaron to instruct the Israelites to select a lamb without blemish, a male a year old, on the tenth day of the first month (Exodus 12:3-5). This lamb was to be slaughtered at twilight on the fourteenth day, and its blood was to be applied to the doorposts and lintels of the houses where the Israelites ate the lamb (Exodus 12:6-7). The blood served as a sign for the Lord to "pass over" the houses of the Israelites, sparing them from the plague of the firstborn (Exodus 12:13).

The Paschal Lamb was to be roasted and eaten with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, and none of it was to remain until morning (Exodus 12:8-10). This meal, known as the Passover, was to be observed as a lasting ordinance, commemorating the Lord's deliverance of His people from slavery (Exodus 12:14).

The Paschal Lamb as a Type of Christ

The New Testament reveals the Paschal Lamb as a type of Christ, the ultimate sacrificial Lamb who delivers humanity from the bondage of sin. The Apostle Paul explicitly identifies Christ as our Passover Lamb: "For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed" (1 Corinthians 5:7). This typological connection is further emphasized in the Gospel of John, where John the Baptist proclaims, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29).

Several elements of the Paschal Lamb typify Christ and His redemptive work:

1. Without Blemish: Just as the Passover lamb was to be without blemish, Christ is described as "a lamb without blemish or defect" (1 Peter 1:19), signifying His sinless nature and perfect obedience to the Father.

2. Sacrificial Death: The slaughter of the Passover lamb prefigures the sacrificial death of Christ. The lamb's blood, which protected the Israelites from judgment, points to the atoning blood of Christ, which redeems believers from sin and death.

3. Deliverance and Redemption: The Passover marked the deliverance of Israel from physical slavery in Egypt. In a greater sense, Christ's sacrifice delivers believers from spiritual slavery to sin, granting them freedom and eternal life.

4. Communal Meal: The Passover meal, shared by the Israelite families, foreshadows the Lord's Supper, where believers partake of the bread and the cup in remembrance of Christ's sacrifice (Luke 22:19-20).

5. Timing of Sacrifice: The timing of Christ's crucifixion during the Passover festival underscores the fulfillment of the typology. As the Passover lambs were being sacrificed, Jesus, the true Lamb of God, was crucified, bringing to completion the redemptive plan foreshadowed in the Exodus.

In summary, the Paschal Lamb serves as a profound type of the Saviour, illustrating the themes of sacrifice, redemption, and deliverance that are ultimately fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Through His death and resurrection, Christ embodies the true and greater Passover, offering salvation to all who believe in Him.
