The Ark of the Covenant, a sacred chest built by the Israelites under the direction of Moses, is central to the worship and religious life of ancient Israel. It is described in the Book of Exodus as being constructed of acacia wood and overlaid with pure gold, both inside and out. The Ark housed the two stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, Aaron's rod that budded, and a pot of manna (
Hebrews 9:4).
The Ark was kept in the Most Holy Place within the Tabernacle, a portable earthly dwelling place of God among the Israelites. It symbolized God's presence and covenant with His people. The Ark was carried by the Levites using poles inserted through rings on its sides, as touching the Ark directly was forbidden (
Exodus 25:10-22).
During the reign of King David, the Ark was brought to Jerusalem. However, an incident occurred during its transport from the house of Abinadab, where it had been kept for many years. Uzzah, one of the men guiding the cart carrying the Ark, reached out to steady it and was struck dead by God for his irreverence (
2 Samuel 6:6-7). This event caused David to fear the Lord and reconsider bringing the Ark directly to the City of David.
Instead, David decided to temporarily place the Ark in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. "So David was unwilling to move the ark of the LORD to the City of David; instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. Thus the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and all his household" (
2 Samuel 6:10-11).
The presence of the Ark in Obed-Edom's house brought significant blessings, demonstrating the power and favor associated with the Ark. This period of blessing was a testament to the Ark's role as a conduit of divine presence and favor. After hearing of the blessings upon Obed-Edom's household, David was encouraged to bring the Ark to Jerusalem with great celebration and reverence, ensuring it was carried according to the prescribed manner by the Levites (
1 Chronicles 15:1-15).
The Ark's stay in the house of Obed-Edom highlights the importance of reverence and obedience to God's commands regarding holy objects and practices. It also underscores the Ark's role as a symbol of God's covenant and the blessings that accompany His presence.
