Naphtali's Inheritance

Topical Encyclopedia
Naphtali, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, was the sixth son of Jacob and the second son of Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant (Genesis 30:7-8). The tribe of Naphtali played a significant role in the history of Israel, and its inheritance in the Promised Land is detailed in the Book of Joshua.

Geographical Boundaries

The inheritance of the tribe of Naphtali is described in Joshua 19:32-39. The territory allotted to Naphtali was located in the northern part of Canaan, encompassing a fertile and strategically significant region. The boundaries of Naphtali's inheritance included several key cities and landmarks. According to Joshua 19:34 , "Then the border turned westward to Aznoth-tabor and went from there to Hukkok. It touched Zebulun on the south, Asher on the west, and the Jordan on the east."

The territory of Naphtali was bordered by the tribes of Asher to the west, Zebulun to the south, and the Jordan River to the east. This location provided Naphtali with access to important trade routes and fertile land, making it a prosperous area for agriculture and commerce.

Key Cities and Features

The inheritance of Naphtali included several notable cities and regions. Among them were Kedesh, Hazor, and Beth-shemesh. Kedesh, in particular, was designated as a city of refuge (Joshua 20:7), providing a place of asylum for those who accidentally committed manslaughter. Hazor was a significant Canaanite city that Joshua had previously conquered (Joshua 11:10-11).

The region of Naphtali was also known for its natural beauty and resources. The fertile land and abundant water sources contributed to the prosperity of the tribe. The area included parts of the Sea of Galilee, which would later become significant in the New Testament as the site of much of Jesus' ministry.

Historical and Spiritual Significance

The tribe of Naphtali played a vital role in the history of Israel. During the period of the Judges, Barak, a leader from Naphtali, was called by the prophetess Deborah to lead the Israelites against the Canaanite army led by Sisera (Judges 4:6-10). This victory was a pivotal moment in Israel's history, demonstrating God's deliverance and faithfulness to His people.

In the prophetic literature, Naphtali is mentioned in the blessings of Jacob and Moses. Jacob's blessing in Genesis 49:21 states, "Naphtali is a doe set free that bears beautiful fawns." This imagery suggests freedom, grace, and fruitfulness. Moses' blessing in Deuteronomy 33:23 further emphasizes the tribe's prosperity: "About Naphtali he said: 'Naphtali is abounding with favor and full of the blessing of the LORD; he will inherit southward to the lake.'"

The New Testament also highlights the region of Naphtali as part of the area where Jesus conducted much of His ministry. Matthew 4:13-15 references the fulfillment of Isaiah's prophecy, stating, "Leaving Nazareth, He went and lived in Capernaum, which is by the sea in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali, to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: 'Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.'"

Naphtali's inheritance, therefore, holds both historical and spiritual significance, reflecting God's provision and the unfolding of His redemptive plan through the ages.
