Issachar's Inheritance

Topical Encyclopedia
Issachar, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, was the fifth son of Jacob and Leah. The tribe's inheritance in the Promised Land is detailed in the Book of Joshua, specifically in Joshua 19:17-23. This inheritance was part of the division of Canaan among the tribes of Israel, as commanded by God through Moses and executed by Joshua.

Geographical Boundaries:

The territory allotted to the tribe of Issachar was located in the northern part of the land of Canaan. The boundaries of Issachar's inheritance are described in Joshua 19:17-23. The land was situated to the east of the tribe of Manasseh, south of Zebulun, and north of Ephraim. It included the fertile plains of Jezreel, which were well-suited for agriculture and livestock, making Issachar's land one of the most agriculturally productive regions in Israel.

Key Cities:

The inheritance of Issachar included several significant cities and towns. Among these were Jezreel, Shunem, and En-gannim. Jezreel, in particular, held strategic importance due to its location in the Jezreel Valley, a major crossroads in ancient Israel. This valley was not only fertile but also a critical route for trade and military movements.

Historical and Biblical Significance:

The tribe of Issachar played a notable role in various biblical narratives. In the Song of Deborah, found in Judges 5, the tribe is commended for its support in the battle against Sisera, the commander of the Canaanite army. Judges 5:15 states, "The princes of Issachar were with Deborah; yes, Issachar was with Barak, sent under his command into the valley."

Issachar is also mentioned in 1 Chronicles 12:32, where the men of Issachar are described as having "understanding of the times, to know what Israel should do." This suggests that the tribe was known for its wisdom and discernment, qualities that were highly valued in the leadership and governance of the nation.

Prophetic Blessings:

Jacob's blessing over Issachar, found in Genesis 49:14-15, portrays the tribe as strong and industrious: "Issachar is a strong donkey, lying down between the sheepfolds. He saw that his resting place was good and that the land was pleasant, so he bent his shoulder to bear a burden and submitted to forced labor." This blessing highlights the tribe's strength and willingness to work hard, which aligns with the agricultural richness of their allotted land.

Moses' blessing in Deuteronomy 33:18-19 also speaks to the prosperity of Issachar, as it is paired with Zebulun: "Rejoice, Zebulun, in your journeys, and Issachar, in your tents. They will summon the peoples to the mountain; there they will offer sacrifices of righteousness, for they will feast on the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand."

Cultural and Economic Contributions:

The fertile land of Issachar allowed the tribe to contribute significantly to the agricultural output of Israel. The plains of Jezreel were ideal for growing crops and raising livestock, which supported not only the tribe itself but also the broader community of Israel. The strategic location of their territory facilitated trade and interaction with neighboring tribes and nations.

In summary, Issachar's inheritance was a region of great agricultural and strategic importance. The tribe's role in biblical history reflects its strength, wisdom, and industrious nature, as well as its contribution to the prosperity and security of the nation of Israel.
