Integrity, in the biblical context, refers to the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles that align with God's standards. It is a steadfast adherence to ethical and moral codes, reflecting a life that is consistent with the teachings of Scripture. The Bible places a high value on integrity, often associating it with righteousness and wisdom.

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "tom" is frequently used to denote integrity, implying completeness, innocence, and uprightness. Proverbs 10:9 states, "He who walks in integrity walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will be found out." This verse highlights the security and peace that come from living a life of integrity, contrasting it with the inevitable exposure of deceitful ways.

Job is a quintessential example of integrity in the Bible. Despite severe trials and suffering, Job maintained his integrity, refusing to curse God or abandon his faith. Job 2:3 records God's commendation of Job: "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one on earth like him, a man who is blameless and upright, who fears God and shuns evil. And he still retains his integrity, even though you incited Me against him to ruin him without cause."

In the New Testament, integrity is closely linked with sincerity and truthfulness. Jesus Christ exemplified perfect integrity, living a life without sin and teaching His followers to do the same. In Matthew 5:37 , Jesus instructs, "But let your statement be, ‘Yes, yes’ or ‘No, no’; anything beyond these comes from the evil one." This teaching emphasizes the importance of honesty and straightforwardness in communication.

The Apostle Paul also emphasizes integrity in his letters, urging believers to live blamelessly and to be above reproach. In 2 Corinthians 8:21 , Paul writes, "For we are taking great care to do what is right, not only in the eyes of the Lord but also in the eyes of men." This reflects the dual responsibility of maintaining integrity before God and before others.

Witness

The concept of witness in the Bible encompasses both the act of testifying to the truth and the role of being a representative of God's work and message. A witness in biblical terms is someone who has seen, heard, or experienced something and is called to testify about it, often in the context of God's redemptive acts.

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word "ed" is used for witness, often in legal contexts. The Ten Commandments include a directive against bearing false witness (Exodus 20:16), underscoring the importance of truthfulness and reliability in testimony.

The prophets served as witnesses to God's covenant with Israel, calling the people back to faithfulness and warning of the consequences of disobedience. Isaiah 43:10 declares, "You are My witnesses, declares the LORD, and My servant whom I have chosen, so that you may consider and believe Me and understand that I am He."

In the New Testament, the Greek word "martys" is used for witness, which is also the root of the English word "martyr." This reflects the early Christians' understanding of witnessing as a commitment that could lead to persecution or even death. Jesus commissioned His disciples to be His witnesses in Acts 1:8 : "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

The Apostle Paul exemplified the role of a witness through his missionary journeys and epistles, testifying to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. In 1 Corinthians 15:15 , Paul asserts, "In that case, we are also found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that He raised Christ from the dead."

The call to be a witness extends to all believers, who are tasked with living lives that reflect the truth of the Gospel and sharing the message of salvation with others. 1 Peter 3:15 encourages believers to "sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you to explain the hope you have." This verse highlights the readiness and responsibility of Christians to testify to their faith with gentleness and respect.
