Influence of Surroundings

The concept of the influence of surroundings is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, emphasizing how one's environment can impact spiritual and moral development. The Scriptures provide numerous examples and teachings that highlight the importance of being mindful of the company one keeps and the settings in which one resides.

Old Testament Insights

In the Old Testament, the influence of surroundings is evident in the account of Lot, who chose to live in the city of Sodom. Genesis 13:12-13 states, "Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot settled in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent toward Sodom. But the men of Sodom were wicked, sinning greatly against the LORD." Lot's choice to dwell near Sodom ultimately led to moral compromise and personal loss, illustrating the dangers of residing in a corrupt environment.

The Israelites' repeated interactions with surrounding pagan nations also serve as a cautionary tale. Despite God's commands to remain separate from the idolatrous practices of their neighbors, the Israelites often succumbed to the influence of these cultures. Judges 3:5-6 notes, "Thus the Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. And they took the daughters of these people in marriage, gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods." This led to cycles of disobedience and divine judgment.

Wisdom Literature

The wisdom literature of the Bible, particularly the Book of Proverbs, frequently addresses the influence of one's surroundings. Proverbs 13:20 advises, "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." This verse underscores the principle that the people with whom one associates can significantly affect one's character and decision-making.

New Testament Teachings

In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul provides guidance on the influence of surroundings in his letters to the early churches. In 1 Corinthians 15:33 , he warns, "Do not be deceived: 'Bad company corrupts good character.'" Paul emphasizes the need for believers to be vigilant about their associations, as negative influences can lead to spiritual decline.

The early Christian community was encouraged to create an environment that fostered spiritual growth and mutual edification. Hebrews 10:24-25 exhorts believers, "And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching." This passage highlights the importance of surrounding oneself with fellow believers who encourage and strengthen one's faith.

Jesus' Example

Jesus Christ Himself demonstrated the balance of engaging with the world while maintaining spiritual integrity. He associated with tax collectors and sinners, yet He remained untainted by their lifestyles. In John 17:15-16 , Jesus prays for His disciples, saying, "I am not asking that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world." Jesus' life exemplifies how believers can be in the world but not of it, influencing their surroundings positively without being negatively influenced.

Practical Application

The Bible encourages believers to be discerning about their environments and relationships. Philippians 4:8 provides a guideline for maintaining a wholesome mental and spiritual environment: "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things." By focusing on virtuous and godly influences, Christians can cultivate a life that honors God and resists the negative pressures of their surroundings.
