Humility

Humility is a fundamental virtue in Christian theology, often seen as the foundation of a faithful life. It involves recognizing one's own limitations and weaknesses, acknowledging the greatness and sovereignty of God, and valuing others above oneself. The Bible frequently emphasizes humility as essential for spiritual growth and a right relationship with God.

In the Old Testament, humility is often associated with wisdom and the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 22:4 states, "The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life." This verse highlights the blessings that accompany a humble heart, suggesting that humility leads to divine favor and prosperity.

The New Testament further develops the concept of humility, particularly through the teachings and example of Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:3-4 instructs believers, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others." This passage underscores the selfless nature of true humility, urging Christians to prioritize the needs and well-being of others.

Jesus Himself is the ultimate model of humility. Philippians 2:5-8 describes how Christ, though divine, "emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death—even death on a cross." This act of self-sacrifice is the epitome of humility, demonstrating that true greatness is found in serving others and submitting to God's will.

Self-Examination

Self-examination is a critical practice for believers, involving introspection and reflection on one's spiritual condition, actions, and motives. It is a means of aligning oneself with God's standards and ensuring that one's life is consistent with biblical teachings.

The Bible encourages self-examination as a way to maintain spiritual integrity and growth. In 2 Corinthians 13:5 , Paul exhorts the church, "Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Can’t you see for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?" This call to self-assessment is a reminder that faith is not merely a matter of outward profession but requires inward authenticity and transformation.

Self-examination is also linked to repentance and confession. In Psalm 139:23-24 , David prays, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting." This prayer reflects a desire for God to reveal hidden sins and guide the believer toward righteousness.

The practice of self-examination is particularly emphasized in the context of the Lord's Supper. In 1 Corinthians 11:28 , Paul instructs, "Each one must examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup." This directive ensures that participants approach the sacrament with reverence and a clear conscience, acknowledging the significance of Christ's sacrifice.
