Human Inconstancy

Definition and Nature:
Human inconstancy refers to the tendency of individuals to be fickle, unreliable, and changeable in their commitments, beliefs, and actions. This trait is often contrasted with the steadfastness and faithfulness of God, who is described in Scripture as unchanging and eternally reliable.

Biblical Examples:

1. Israel's Unfaithfulness:
The nation of Israel is frequently depicted as inconstant in their relationship with God. Despite witnessing God's mighty works and receiving His covenant, the Israelites repeatedly turned to idolatry and disobedience. In Judges 2:17 , it is written, "Yet they would not listen to their judges, but prostituted themselves to other gods and worshiped them. They quickly turned from the way of their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD’s commands."

2. Peter's Denial:
The Apostle Peter is a notable example of human inconstancy in the New Testament. Despite his earlier declaration of unwavering loyalty to Jesus, Peter denied knowing Him three times during the events leading up to the crucifixion. In Matthew 26:74-75 , it states, "At that, he began to curse and swear to them, 'I do not know the man!' And immediately a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: 'Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.' And he went outside and wept bitterly."

3. The Galatians' Desertion:
The Apostle Paul addresses the inconstancy of the Galatian church, who were quickly deserting the gospel of grace for a different gospel. In Galatians 1:6 , Paul writes, "I am astonished how quickly you are deserting the One who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel."

Theological Implications:

1. Contrast with Divine Faithfulness:
Human inconstancy highlights the contrast between the fickle nature of humanity and the unwavering faithfulness of God. In Malachi 3:6 , God declares, "Because I, the LORD, do not change, you descendants of Jacob have not been destroyed." This divine attribute assures believers of God's reliability and the certainty of His promises.

2. Call to Steadfastness:
Scripture calls believers to emulate God's faithfulness by being steadfast in their faith and commitments. In 1 Corinthians 15:58 , Paul exhorts, "Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."

3. Dependence on the Holy Spirit:
Recognizing human inconstancy, believers are encouraged to rely on the Holy Spirit for strength and perseverance. In Galatians 5:16 , Paul advises, "So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh."

Practical Applications:

1. Self-Examination:
Believers are encouraged to examine their own lives for areas of inconstancy and seek God's help in becoming more faithful. Psalm 139:23-24 serves as a prayerful model: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting."

2. Community Accountability:
The Christian community plays a vital role in encouraging steadfastness among its members. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges, "And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds. Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching."

3. Trust in God's Faithfulness:
In moments of personal failure or doubt, believers are reminded to trust in God's unchanging nature and His promises. Lamentations 3:22-23 offers comfort: "Because of the LORD’s loving devotion we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!"
