Holiness of God

The holiness of God is a central attribute that signifies His absolute purity, moral perfection, and separation from sin. The Hebrew word for holy, "qadosh," conveys the idea of being set apart or distinct. God's holiness is foundational to His nature and is emphasized throughout Scripture. In Isaiah 6:3, the seraphim proclaim, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory." This threefold repetition underscores the supreme holiness of God, setting Him apart from all creation.

God's holiness is also evident in His moral law, which reflects His perfect character. Leviticus 19:2 commands, "Speak to the entire congregation of the Israelites and tell them: ‘Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.’" This call to holiness is a directive for God's people to emulate His purity and righteousness in their lives.

The holiness of God is further demonstrated in His interactions with humanity. In Exodus 3:5, God instructs Moses, "Do not come any closer," the LORD said. "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." This encounter illustrates the reverence and awe that God's holiness demands. Similarly, in the New Testament, 1 Peter 1:15-16 echoes the call to holiness: "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

Jealousy of God

The jealousy of God is another attribute that reflects His deep commitment to His people and His desire for their exclusive devotion. Unlike human jealousy, which can be rooted in insecurity or envy, God's jealousy is a righteous and protective zeal for His honor and the well-being of His covenant people. In Exodus 34:14, God declares, "For you must not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God."

This divine jealousy is rooted in God's covenant relationship with Israel, where He demands exclusive worship and loyalty. Deuteronomy 4:24 states, "For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God." This imagery of a consuming fire highlights the intensity and purity of God's jealousy, which seeks to guard His people from idolatry and spiritual adultery.

God's jealousy is also evident in His response to Israel's unfaithfulness. In Ezekiel 39:25, God promises restoration, saying, "Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Now I will restore Jacob from captivity and will have compassion on the whole house of Israel, and I will be jealous for My holy name." Here, God's jealousy is linked to His desire to uphold His name and reputation among the nations.

In the New Testament, the concept of God's jealousy extends to the church. In 2 Corinthians 11:2, Paul expresses a godly jealousy for the Corinthian believers, saying, "I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. For I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to Him." This reflects God's desire for the church to remain faithful to Christ, free from spiritual compromise.
