Darics

The daric was a gold coin used during the Persian Empire, named after Darius I of Persia, who reigned from 522 to 486 BC. The coin was notable for its high purity and consistent weight, making it a trusted medium of exchange throughout the empire and beyond. The daric featured an image of the Persian king, often depicted as an archer, which symbolized the power and reach of the Persian Empire.

In the context of the Bible, the daric is mentioned in the Old Testament, specifically in the books of Ezra and Nehemiah. In Ezra 2:69 , it is recorded: "According to their ability, they gave to the treasury for this work 61,000 darics of gold, 5,000 minas of silver, and 100 priestly garments." This passage highlights the use of darics in the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem, illustrating the coin's role in facilitating significant religious and communal projects.

The daric's presence in the biblical narrative underscores the historical interactions between the Jewish people and the Persian Empire, particularly during the period of the return from Babylonian exile. The use of Persian currency in these accounts reflects the broader geopolitical realities of the time, where Persian influence was pervasive.

Minas

The mina was a unit of weight and currency in the ancient Near East, including among the Israelites. It was used to measure both precious metals and commodities. The value of a mina varied over time and location, but it was generally considered a substantial amount, often equated to about 50 shekels.

In the Bible, the mina is mentioned in several contexts, both in the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, the mina is referenced in the context of temple contributions and royal treasuries. For example, in 1 Kings 10:17 , it is noted: "He made three hundred small shields of hammered gold, with three minas of gold in each shield, and the king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon." This passage illustrates the use of minas in the opulent construction projects of King Solomon, reflecting the wealth and splendor of his reign.

In the New Testament, the mina is featured in the Parable of the Ten Minas, found in Luke 19:11-27 . In this parable, a nobleman entrusts his servants with minas to invest while he is away. The parable serves as a teaching on stewardship, responsibility, and the kingdom of God. The use of minas in this parable highlights the significant value and trust associated with this unit of currency, as well as its role as a measure of accountability.

The mention of minas in both testaments underscores their importance in the economic and social life of the biblical world. They were not only a measure of wealth but also a symbol of trust and responsibility, as seen in the teachings of Jesus. The use of minas in biblical narratives provides insight into the economic practices and values of ancient societies, as well as the spiritual lessons derived from them.
