God forms Adam from the dust of the ground and breathes into his nostrils the breath of life, making him a living being (Genesis 2:7). God places Adam in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it, granting him the freedom to eat from any tree except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:15-17).

Recognizing that it is not good for man to be alone, God creates a suitable helper for Adam. He causes Adam to fall into a deep sleep, takes one of his ribs, and forms Eve, the first woman (Genesis 2:18-22). Adam acknowledges her as "bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh" (Genesis 2:23), establishing the institution of marriage as a divine ordinance.
