Control

In the biblical context, control refers to the exercise of authority or power over one's actions, decisions, and environment. The concept of control is deeply rooted in the sovereignty of God, who is depicted as having ultimate control over the universe. In the Book of Genesis, God demonstrates His control through the act of creation: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). This foundational verse establishes God's supreme authority over all creation.

Human beings, created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), are endowed with a measure of control over the earth. This is evident in the mandate given to Adam and Eve: "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth" (Genesis 1:28). This dominion implies a responsibility to steward creation wisely and justly.

However, the fall of man introduced sin into the world, complicating the exercise of control. Human attempts to exert control often lead to conflict with God's will, as seen in the account of the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11:1-9). Here, humanity's desire to make a name for themselves and control their destiny resulted in divine intervention and the scattering of peoples.

In the New Testament, control is also addressed in the context of self-discipline and the fruit of the Spirit. The Apostle Paul writes, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23). Self-control is a virtue that believers are encouraged to cultivate, reflecting a life led by the Holy Spirit rather than by fleshly desires.

Responsibility

Responsibility in the Bible is closely linked to the concepts of stewardship, accountability, and obedience to God's commands. From the beginning, humanity is given responsibilities, as seen in the charge to Adam to "work and keep" the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15). This task underscores the human role as caretakers of God's creation.

The theme of responsibility is further developed in the Mosaic Law, where the Israelites are given commandments to guide their conduct and relationship with God and others. The Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17) serve as a moral framework, emphasizing responsibilities toward God (e.g., worship, reverence) and fellow humans (e.g., honoring parents, prohibitions against murder and theft).

In the New Testament, Jesus expands on the idea of responsibility through His teachings. The Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30) illustrates the expectation that individuals use their God-given resources and abilities wisely and productively. The servants are held accountable for how they manage their master's assets, highlighting the principle that with greater gifts comes greater responsibility.

The Apostle Paul also speaks to the responsibility of believers to live in a manner worthy of their calling. In Ephesians 4:1, he urges, "I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have received" . This call to responsibility encompasses ethical living, unity, and the exercise of spiritual gifts for the edification of the church.

Ultimately, the Bible teaches that all individuals will be held accountable for their actions. Romans 14:12 states, "So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God" . This accountability underscores the importance of living a life that aligns with God's will, recognizing that both control and responsibility are entrusted to humanity by the Creator.
