Conduct Toward Outsiders

The Bible provides clear guidance on how believers are to conduct themselves toward those outside the faith community. This conduct is rooted in love, respect, and a desire to reflect the character of Christ to the world.

Love and Compassion

The foundation of Christian conduct toward outsiders is love. Jesus emphasized this in the Great Commandment, which calls believers to love their neighbors as themselves (Matthew 22:39). This love is not limited to fellow believers but extends to all people, including those outside the faith. The Apostle Paul echoes this sentiment in Romans 13:8, "Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law."

Hospitality

Hospitality is a significant aspect of Christian conduct toward outsiders. Hebrews 13:2 encourages believers, "Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it." This hospitality is not merely about opening one's home but also about creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for those who are different or unfamiliar.

Respect and Peace

Believers are called to live peacefully with all people, as much as it depends on them. Romans 12:18 instructs, "If it is possible on your part, live at peace with everyone." This peaceable conduct is coupled with respect for others, recognizing their inherent dignity as individuals created in the image of God. 1 Peter 2:17 advises, "Treat everyone with high regard: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king."

Witness and Example

Christians are to be witnesses to the transformative power of the Gospel through their conduct. Colossians 4:5-6 states, "Act wisely toward outsiders, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone." This passage highlights the importance of wisdom, grace, and readiness in interactions with those outside the faith.

Avoiding Judgment

While maintaining a commitment to truth, believers are cautioned against a judgmental attitude toward outsiders. 1 Corinthians 5:12-13 clarifies, "What business of mine is it to judge those outside the church? Are you not to judge those inside? God will judge those outside." This underscores the importance of focusing on one's conduct and witness rather than passing judgment on those who do not share the same beliefs.

Evangelism and Discipleship

The Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20 calls believers to "go and make disciples of all nations." This mission involves engaging with outsiders in a manner that is respectful and loving, sharing the Gospel message with gentleness and respect, as instructed in 1 Peter 3:15, "But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is in you, but respond with gentleness and respect."

Prayer for Outsiders

Prayer is a vital component of conduct toward outsiders. Believers are encouraged to pray for all people, including those in authority and those who do not yet know Christ. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 urges, "First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered for everyone—for kings and all those in authority—so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity."

In summary, the Bible calls Christians to conduct themselves toward outsiders with love, hospitality, respect, and a commitment to peace, while being mindful of their witness and the call to share the Gospel.
