Compassion

Compassion is a central theme in the Bible, reflecting the character of God and the expected behavior of His followers. The Hebrew word often translated as "compassion" is "racham," which conveys a deep, tender love and mercy. In the New Testament, the Greek word "splagchnizomai" is used, indicating a visceral, heartfelt empathy.

God's compassion is evident throughout Scripture. In Exodus 34:6, God reveals Himself to Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and truth." This declaration underscores God's nature as one who is deeply moved by the plight of His people and acts to alleviate their suffering.

The Psalms frequently highlight God's compassion. Psalm 103:13-14 states, "As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He is mindful that we are dust." This passage illustrates God's understanding and tender care for human frailty.

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ embodies divine compassion. The Gospels recount numerous instances where Jesus is moved with compassion, leading Him to heal the sick, feed the hungry, and teach the lost. In Matthew 9:36, it is written, "When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd."

Believers are called to emulate God's compassion. Colossians 3:12 exhorts, "Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." This call to action reflects the transformative power of God's love in the lives of His people, urging them to extend the same mercy and kindness to others.

Truth

Truth is a foundational concept in the Bible, representing both the nature of God and the standard by which His followers are to live. The Hebrew word "emet" and the Greek word "aletheia" both convey the idea of reliability, faithfulness, and conformity to fact.

God is depicted as the ultimate source of truth. In Deuteronomy 32:4, Moses declares, "He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just. A God of faithfulness without injustice, righteous and upright is He." This verse affirms God's unwavering commitment to truth and justice.

The Psalms also celebrate God's truth. Psalm 119:160 proclaims, "The entirety of Your word is truth, and all Your righteous judgments endure forever." Here, the psalmist acknowledges the enduring truth of God's Word, which serves as a guide for righteous living.

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ is identified as the embodiment of truth. In John 14:6, Jesus states, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." This declaration emphasizes that truth is not merely a concept but is personified in the person of Jesus Christ.

Believers are called to live in accordance with truth. Ephesians 4:15 instructs, "Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head." This verse highlights the importance of truth in the Christian community, promoting growth and unity through honest and loving communication.

The relationship between compassion and truth is integral to the Christian faith. While compassion reflects God's love and mercy, truth represents His holiness and justice. Together, they form a balanced approach to living out the Christian life, as believers are called to uphold truth while extending compassion to others.
