In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word often translated as "compassion" is "racham," which conveys a sense of deep mercy and love. God's compassion is vividly portrayed in His dealings with Israel. In Exodus 34:6, God reveals Himself to Moses, saying, "The LORD, the LORD God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion and truth." This declaration underscores God's enduring mercy and patience with His people despite their frequent disobedience.

The New Testament continues this theme, with Jesus Christ embodying compassion in His earthly ministry. The Greek word "splagchnizomai" is used to describe the compassion of Jesus, indicating a visceral, heartfelt response. In Matthew 9:36, it is written, "When He saw the crowds, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." Jesus' compassion led Him to heal the sick, feed the hungry, and teach the lost.

Boldness

Boldness in the Bible is the courage to act or speak fearlessly, especially in the face of opposition or danger. It is a quality that is both commanded and commended in Scripture, often associated with the proclamation of God's truth and the advancement of His kingdom.

In the Old Testament, figures like Joshua and David exemplify boldness. Joshua is commanded in Joshua 1:9, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." This boldness is rooted in the assurance of God's presence and promises.

The New Testament further emphasizes boldness, particularly in the context of spreading the Gospel. The apostles, filled with the Holy Spirit, displayed remarkable boldness in their witness. Acts 4:31 records, "After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly." This boldness was not a natural trait but a divine empowerment for the mission of the church.

The Apostle Paul frequently speaks of boldness in his letters. In Ephesians 6:19-20, he requests prayer "that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Christians today are encouraged to approach God with boldness in prayer, as Hebrews 4:16 exhorts, "Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." This boldness is grounded in the work of Christ, who provides believers with access to the Father.
