Topical Encyclopedia
The "Command of the LORD" refers to the divine instructions, decrees, and mandates given by God to His people throughout the Bible. These commands are integral to understanding God's will and purpose for humanity, as well as His expectations for righteous living. The commands of the LORD are found throughout both the Old and New Testaments and are central to the covenant relationship between God and His people.

Old Testament Context

In the Old Testament, the commands of the LORD are often associated with the Law given to Moses on Mount Sinai. These include the Ten Commandments, which serve as a foundational moral code for the Israelites. Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21 detail these commandments, which include directives such as honoring one's parents, refraining from murder, and keeping the Sabbath holy.

The commands of the LORD extend beyond the Decalogue to encompass various laws and statutes that govern religious, civil, and moral life. In Deuteronomy 6:1-2, Moses emphasizes the importance of these commands: "These are the commandments and statutes and ordinances that the LORD your God has instructed me to teach you to follow in the land that you are about to enter and possess, so that you and your children and grandchildren may fear the LORD your God all the days of your lives by keeping all His statutes and commandments that I give you, and so that your days may be prolonged."

The commands are not merely legalistic requirements but are intended to guide the Israelites in a covenantal relationship with God. Obedience to these commands is linked to blessings, while disobedience results in curses, as outlined in Deuteronomy 28.

Prophetic Emphasis

The prophets frequently called the people of Israel back to obedience to the commands of the LORD. They warned of the consequences of neglecting God's commands and urged repentance. For instance, in Jeremiah 7:23, the prophet conveys God's message: "But this is what I commanded them: 'Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people. You must walk in all the ways I have commanded you, so that it may go well with you.'"

New Testament Context

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ reaffirms the importance of God's commands, summarizing them in the Great Commandments: love for God and love for neighbor. In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus states, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

Jesus' teachings often highlight the spirit of the law rather than mere external adherence. In John 14:15, Jesus links love for Him with obedience to His commands: "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments."

The apostles continue this emphasis on obedience to God's commands. In 1 John 5:3, the apostle John writes, "For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome."

Theological Significance

The commands of the LORD are not arbitrary rules but are expressions of God's holy character and His desire for His people to reflect His holiness. They are given for the well-being of humanity and the flourishing of society. The commands serve as a guide for ethical living and are a means by which believers can demonstrate their love and loyalty to God.

Throughout Scripture, the commands of the LORD are portrayed as life-giving and protective, offering wisdom and understanding. Psalm 19:7-8 declares, "The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, bringing joy to the heart; the commandments of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes."

In summary, the command of the LORD encompasses the divine instructions given to guide believers in their relationship with God and with one another. These commands are central to the biblical narrative and are essential for understanding the nature of God's covenant with His people.
